| | | I took part in a transportation meeting in Pikeville, KY on May 21 and had to travel parts of Corridor G (US 119)... Raccoon Creek Mining Company -- http://www.abandon...dex.php3?catid=129 I spotted this very easily from one of our location stops next to a massive US 119 span across the entire valley. It has only been abandoned for a few years, as a Terraserver image shows it being active. Later down the road, I noticed that they were ripping up rail lines at Stone still -- a whole year later! Stone was a massive coal mining region and had a very large coal camp town, for which I will do a feature soon. Power plant and most mining structures were just recently demolished before I got there, however But I did notice an abandoned rail... and led me to the Mary Helen Coal Company. It even had "1974" stamped into it, which I assume was when it opened -- http://www.abandon...dex.php3?catid=128 On the way home, I opted for US 119 to WV 65 to US 52 so I could check up on a structure I found a few months prior but did not stop... the Lenore Jr. High School. Too bad there is an active trailer (with a CUTE puppy!) in the rear. I wonder if he is the owner -- http://www.abandon...dex.php3?catid=130 Enjoy!
