Not that I'm any expert, but I'd hazard a guess that Streetsville wanted to keep their traditional name for the Queen St. stretch when Mississauga sprawled upwards and outwards and surrounded them.

yep.

Very nice find indeed.

I've been able to find archived docs like this before, sometimes digitalized on a local library site BUT nothing quite compares to the nice organization at the McGill site you linked.

I'm from Percy Township in northumberland county originally.... it's neat, there are families with their names on the map that are around here still, some even on the same land.

Awesome post! Been trying to find a map of Scugog Island, as there is an old indian burial ground somewhere out on the north end of the island. Based on previous knowledge, this map has pointed me to where I think it should be. Thanks for the link, this is going to help me in my exploring for a long time

Since we're already slightly off-topic, does anyone know how it came to be that the main drag thru Streetsville (Mississauga) has so many names?

It's called Mississauga Road until.....

Who knows, although it suits the randomness of Mississauga now, theres only a hand-full of roads that are actually straight....

I live in the town of Bowmanville...in the Municipality of Clarington....in the Region of Durham. Clarington has something like a dozen towns, hamlets and communities within it.

Hi, CowboyPenner! I'm a new resident of Bowmanville, in the Municipality of Clarington, in the Region Of Durham, in Ontario - in Canada. With this many levels of government, everything runs with a series of checks and balances so harmony is maintained and everyone is happy. A-hehee. No... Want to go exploring sometime?

Sure as long as the places are wheelchair accessible.

Wow, it's fun trying to set all the street names to former landowners that had land on the sides of the streets around here, the good ol' Papes and Logans and even little Coxwells whose small parcel of land seems incongruous with the main road named after them.

Also interesting to see the Taylor family's plots of land, a member of which would be digging postholes one day and find the clay in the earth remarkably suitable for making bricks.

I love history! Great find, thanks.

Its cool to see how small my city (Owen Sound) was back then compared to now. It was only about half the size.
