| | | Ouch, sounds royally nasty. I was watching the first half hour of Speed the other day, the bomb in the elevator bit. Were any of the elevator shaft goings-on accurate or even plausable? Apparently that part was filmed in an actual building's elevator shaft. So that much was right- I wonder about the stuff that went on in there, though. Don't worry, I have NO plans to elevator surf- I'll leave that to the techs to handle. But it is pretty cool to get up into the elevator rooms of some of the buildings I watch and see the machinery working when somebody down below hits that call button. Sometimes working security has its perks.

| | | I used to work on 'elevators' over here in the UK ('lifts' to us) and i wouldn't recommend surfing them either. It's dull in there and dangerous and easy to get stuck or caught! A lift running normally and in service probably won't have enough room for you to stand on top when it reaches the top level, and even the slow ones will get there pretty quick, it's deceptive when you are inside. The poster above (can't see username right now, sorry!) is also right that ones with sheaves (pulleys) on the cars are the worst, you end up crouching because there's nothing to hold onto, trying to keep away from the limb mashing pulley and cables and the pointy metal crap on the walls of the shaft thats running by your head. Stay inside where the lights, mirrors and controls are, trust me. You'll get there quicker too.
