In a backbreaker drain in Waterloo recently, I decided to test the cellphone I'd brought with me (A friend's, so I don't remember the model...but I don't like to drain without one "just in case", it's a bit more dangerous than simple UE), and it worked absolutely fine. Probably only a few feet under the surface though, so m'eh

Satellite phones have a LOT less signal margin than cell phones. I am not aware of ANY satellite phone service that will work without a direct line of sight to the sky.

Although cell phone companies will claim that cell phones "aren't designed for use inside buildings," they obviously do usually work there. I have personally tested Iridium and Globalstar satellite phones and was unable to use them from inside even a single-story wood frame house. If I pointed the antenna out of a window, I could sometimes get a call to connect for 15-20 seconds, but then the satellite would go out of "sight" and the call would drop.

If you don't want it known, don't say it on a phone.

What you want is a military comm link set...maybe an old russian VHF talkie...I have found these to be very useful underground, that or even some of the Motorla's...not the dirt cheap ones though...maybe the t7200
