Here are 2 links to information about the Chicago freight tunnels,
which were in business until 1959. The movie "Blues Brothers"
imitated the tunnels on a Hollywood set.

Illinois Rwy. Museum in East Union has a website page about how
they recovered one of the trains more than 40 years later. I'll
try to post that link another time.

Currently, the CDOT people are preparing my legal entry/background check package so that I can gain access in June. It only took 4 emails over the course of two months to initiate this.

Now those look like some tunnels worthy of finding a back way into. Has anyone heard of other explorers that have found a way into these old tunnels?

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, cigar in one hand, favorite drink in the other, body thouroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO-HOOO----WHAT A RIDE!!!"

It was pretty easy before September 11th!!

Now, everything is welded shut.

Also, many of the entrances are being obliterated by new construction.

yeah, no permits were needed. Just a crowbar and a few rubber boots.

I saw your question on the deep tunnel on the yahoo board.
you can see giant vents all along the north branch along rohan and river park.
I use to go to school around there so I always wondered what they were there for.

I was lucky enough to get to explore the CFT tunnels once. Some of the CUE people went back a second time later on. Very extensive system, although pretty much every tunnel looks alike.

I want to be different. But I want to be different just like everybody else, because if I really were different, everybody would think I was crazy and weird.

They probably have street signs, but still an impressive system!

I only listen to 104.7 Poop. I'm always in deep shit, so I may as well listen to poop.

From the old pictures I have seen of it they did have signs for what street you were under.. But I couldn't tell ya if they are still there.. I think if you kept a very close look on where you were and what turns you took/how many rail you cross you should be able to keep track of where you are, but it is massive.. and I think it'd be pretty easy even if paying attention to lose track.. But ya can't say it wouldn't be fun... *grin*
