| | | yes I am from Dallas I maybe like the last native born Dallas guy here though! I am planning a DFW expedition on some old infrastructure soon if anyones interested, mainly for the photos Ive already recon'd the place once and was planning to put a terracache in there (terracaching is a lot like geocaching but not as wimpy) anyway this would need to be a small group 2 or 3 at most and need fit in a cover story so send a msg if interested [last edit 4/30/2005 5:24 AM by Explorer Zero - edited 1 times]

| | | I'm in Austin but if anyone is going to be getting together at any particular time for exploring and whatnot in Dallas, I'd be interested and probably shouldn't have any problem making the trip. Lots of stuff to see there. Lots of stuff indeed.

I'm a new guy here but have been poking around places I shouldn't be for a long time. I started in the old abandoned Greater Southwest Airport terminal which was cool and then graduated to the old underground railroad tracks in downtown Dallas. I'm still trying to find a way into the DART drainage tunnels. Apparently, there are two 18' diameter tubes running from North Dallas to the Trinity River where they end in a catch tank the size of a football field before 8' diameter exit drains. Anybody found a way in yet and, if so, are they rideable?(Sk8 board, bicycle, whatever)
I'm a blatant waste of time and resources. |

Im from Dallas. We need to Talk man, I'll send you a pm. I have not heard of the Dart drains where did you get that? I know they have some massive pumping capacity for the 120' deep tunnels that gotta go somewhere but an 18' drain? leave the bike at home lets take a Toyota truck man! Amon Carter Field (GSW Airport) been there done that. We used to race on the old tarmacs, autocross and slalom mostly but some unsanctioned late night drag races too. The story was there was some crazy guy or "wild man" living in the tunnels under the old terminal. We went down there lookin but there was mostly just trash and that was like 1979 or 80 and no camera. Then of all things a news story that the police caught a guy that was indeed living down there.

| | | Same place. Greater Southwest Airport/Amon Carter. I found this site that has some good pics of it in it's hay day. http://members.tri..._TX_FtWorth_NE.htm We never found a crazy man but the old 3d murals were cool and rode the dumb waiter down to the kitchen. No camera for us either which is too bad. I used to ride my go cart and later motorcycles on the old runway. They put piles of rubble on but that just stopped cars. If you can suck up to someone at the Science Place II, the old Civil Defence shelter is still easily accessible downstairs past the two foot thick ten feet by four feet lead lined hydraulicly raised blast door. (There;s another door like it in the playground outside but it's never open) The kitchen, bathrooms, communication area and huge situation boards are still pretty much intact. They store some stuff down there but not a lot. I went down there a few times when I worked at the Science Place a few years ago.

I drove around the old site a few months ago and it was all marked no trespassing there is still some part of an old building out in the middle of the field I cant identify when you look at the aerials from 2003 you can see the shrubs used to spell something the way they were layed out I doubt the place is secured its mostly just an empty field now from what I saw. the Science Place II is that at Fair Park or related to it? we still need to get some Dallas u.e.s together even if we dont have a Level 3 my best time to get free is Sundays the Dallas Trekkers club is hosting a 10k walk through underground Dallas July 8, not sure how much fun that will be though its all those pedestrian tunnels open to everyone Im sure. guess it could be a chance to scout some access points though

| | | The Science Place II is near the back of the fairgrounds. As you walk in the front door of the building, there's a staircase to your right leading down. About 10 feet down there is a concrete hydraulically rasied lid that has been propped open that would cover the entrance. At the bottom of the stairs is another steel door which is the entrance to the old CD shelter. The old railway tunnels downtown extended from Union Station over by the Hyatt Tower over to the old Neuhoff plant where the American Airlines Center is now. The tunnels roughly follow Griffin St. and One Main Place, the underground mall, is part of the tunnell system they cleaned up. All of the old Sante' Fe buildings ( including the Federal Building) were connected under ground and pretty much any building along that line along Griffin that has a fallout shelter sign is connected to the tunnell system.

Thats way cool man wonder if you can get in/out of that anywhere else? If it goes under or even near the Federal building you can bet thats secured but where does it come out near the AA ctr? Actually I was referring to the old tunnels at Amon Carter. They were like ramps and concours for passnegers and baggage but I think there are service tunnels down there too. I never saw those but would like to. The concours would have been costly to fill in but who knows maybe they did, part of that field was used by the military at one point I remember seeing a B36 out there on display

I'm not sure what's left by the AA center. The last time I was there was long before it was built. The train tunnels went to the Neuhoff meat packing plant that used to be near that location and all the new construction has made it impossible for me to figure out where entrances might be. I was in the old Amon Carter site and went all over it but the only concourses I found were all above ground and had escalators down to the tarmac. The only underground stuff I found was under the terminal building and was mainly service areas like a big basement. The old gold leaf relief sculpture was still there then but had been vandalized by that time. Here's a photo of it when they were still open. We used to get in to that old B-36 Peacemaker and poke around too.
