| | | So, my phone's dying. I'll need a replacement soon, and I'd like something hardy enough to take on missions. I'm not overly function conscious, I just want something that'll bounce if I drop it. Any ideas?

| | | I use a Telus "mike" system. It is great because it has the two way radio function plus all the normal functions of a cell phone. I am not sure where you are, but Telus works very well in most built up areas, and if you know somebody else on the "mike" system then you can two way them like a walkie talkie or FRS.I have taken mine into fires, it has been dropped during a rappeling exercise and has stood up well. Get one with a rubber housing. In the States they have Nextel. Both have a reciprocal service agreement. You should cost out what would serve you best for your dollars worth.

| | | Are you asking what phone is most durable or the coverage quality of your service area? Most phones are designed to survive a decent drop. If you get a good belt-holster your phone shouldn't fall out.

| | | I had nextel for a while. They offer a couple really tough phones. The one I had was supposed to be made to military spec on dust protection and was almost entirely encased in rubber. Over kill, really. Just get a little case to go over your phone and don't drop it in water.

| | | Cell phones are really much more durable than most people think. I've got just a generic LG phone that I've had for about 2 and a half years now. You wouldn't believe the things that have happened to it, and it still works fine. It's survived countless falls, even one from the second story roof of a house onto pavement. Other than some cosmetic issues, it still works just as well as the day I got it.

| | | Thanks for all the pointers, but I think I've found exactly the phone I'm looking for: http://www.mobile-...onic-a101-en.shtml Dinky, rugged, and cheap enough for me not to care to much when I inevitably drop it in a ditch.

How close can you go?
| | Re: Robust mobiles <Reply # 7 on 4/16/2005 6:49 AM >
| | | Old phones are more durable than new ones, but of course not as durable as the ones that were made to stand dropping, kicking, wetting and so on. But anyway, my Nokia 6110 which spends a lot of time between my hand and the ground is over six and half years old and still works as good as a new one (sans the battery; need to replace it), and most of the people I know have changed phones like three or four times during that time, mostly because they have dropped them. And if you have an old one and it breaks, it doesn't feel that bad. [last edit 4/16/2005 9:03 AM by Tupsumato - edited 1 times]

| | | I can't find them online right now, but I know they make cellphones specifically for construction workers and general contractors. I know I've seen them somewhere, it might be worth asking about at the wireless store.

| | | I have had some really good luck with Nextel phones. I use them at work, and I am in construction. I have dropped my nextel from 30 foot scizzor lifts and still worked fine. so, that would be my suggestion is they where available in yer neck of the woods...

| | | i used to have a panasonic phone, i cant remember the model number but it was similar to the a100, it was tall and thin not a flip, also it was coated in rubber and was marketed as the outdoorsman phone, the main reason i bought it was cause at the cell phone place, at&t i beleve my plan was at the time, the salesman knew me and knew i was an explorer and his exact words that sold me were "you could throw this off the tower of danvers state and it would still work" well i never tried, but it sure was a kick ass phone. i did jump into a river once and it floated out of my pocket to the surface, and still worked. but another time getting wet it stopped working. but all in all it was the best phone ive ever owned. i now have a nextel i530 rubber coated flip, works great. i was going to get the more fancy one but im so ruff on my phones i figured better safe than sorry. eventually i want to get the blackberry by nextel.

| | | I also use Telus Mike cell phone service up here in Canada. Even though some phones may be expensive (had to pay $300.00)and a 2 year contract to get it, they are the toughest phones out on the market. My phone has been dropped on the pavement, temporarily lost in the woods, and it still works like a charm. The direct connect (two-way radio) is also pretty good, except in some locations I explore, there is no Mike service at all, so the FRS is good to carry as well.
