IE can only display the icons when the page is still in your cache. So if you've recently cleared your cache, or have your cache set to small, or haven't been to that page in ages, the icon no longer works. (Technical reason: Bookmarks in IE are just windows shortcuts -- these can not contain an icon, only point to an icon file. Therefore, it points to the file in your cache.) 2. Other browsers, like Mozilla, limit the size of the icon. It can't be bigger than a few K. Many site-owners don't realize this, and create very large icons. As such, the browsers don't save them along with the bookmarks. (Technical details: Mozilla and Firefox and related store the icons as hex data inside the bookmarks.html file. Obviously, there's a size limit. Icons (ICO) are files which can contain any number of size/colour depth combinations, so many designers create an icon file with 10 or more images, which can add up to over 50k easily.) huskies - such fluff.
