I would not have to reload the pages 15 times/hour to see if there is a new post thus saving uer's bandwidth.
Im sure i woudnt be the only one to dig this feature.

I've written several RDF, RSS etc templates for other sites. If any moderators want one, ask. On the other hand, it's a pretty simple thing to do anyway.

I wouldn't recommend using Firefox to read live feeds on UER though, just set yours to read slashdot and see what happens after a few days.

Given the nature of RSS, I'd say new topics and new locations. Perhaps updated locations, too. Perhaps only those topics/locations/etc a user watches (but that is expensive because it's customised, and RSS feeds are hit a lot so they have to be very carefully cached server-side).
However, now I think about it, it may not be as easy as all that! When the stricter access control takes effect, a public RSS feed will be pointless (as the forums and LDB will be locked down), and all RSS feeds will have to be duly authenticated. I can't remember if this is possible now, but it's been a long eight double-shift days at work.
I'd love to see something like that though. One of my basic problems with UER is the fact I have to check it actively for replies etc. It's more like a text-only BBS than an web site (not that I'm complaining, I cut my teeth on several of those, and UER gives me lots of nostalgia).

I was thinking of a rss feed for every forum.
Every forum would have a feed that would include the first post of every thread.
For the uedb maybe a feed for each city, with an indication for when a location is updated and/or when a new gallery is posted. with only the basic info no pictures.

syndication is done automatically. once you have one its not much more complicated to add a hundred of them

Definitely. All you have is a single script for all of them.
However, RSS feeds are pounded mercilessly (100 users accessing 10 feeds each, hitting them once every 10 minutes; do the math). There's wisdom in caching them as static pages with an explicit HTTP Expires: header (maybe thirty minutes into the future) to help proxies and caches between you and the user and to reduce the work the server has to do. Static pages are served much faster than dynamic ones. You can trigger the regeneration of the appropriate feed(s) when a post is made or a location is created/edited. So in that respect you can have 'too many' feeds.

RSS feeds are great for things like blogs or news, but otherwise, I just don't see the point.

RSS, unless I'm very mistaken, transmits information about how often the server wants syndication clients to reload the feed. This is the minimum refresh period (users are free to choose a longer period). I don't know if it's mandatory for clients to honour this minimum period, and even then, I don't know how many clients do.
