| | | bare bones: 'Garrity' flashlight fixed blade gerber hunting knife multi-tool then there is my uber-prepared exploring for days and/or hiking/camping (it's still very light-weight) backpack filled with: waterproof case w\ matches tiny back-up flashlight spare small mag-light emergency poncho emergency-heat blanket multi-tool traveling utensils (knife/spoon/fork) blade sharpener light weight metal "tong" type thing for examining nasty shit canteen first aid kit w\plenty of band-aids and non-latex gloves emergency clothing mending kit "You CAN survive" can filled with: -candy -sugar packets -folding wing stove -hexamine fuel tabs -tea bags -poly water bags -energy drink -survival instructions -damp-proof matches -aluminum foil -instant broth packets The "You can survive" thing is a very lot of shit stuff into this little sealed can for emergency situations, it doesn't weigh any more than an ounce or two. The whole pack weighs only about 5 pounds at most. [last edit 5/3/2005 12:31 AM by AdventureGrime - edited 1 times]

| | | What do I carry????
-Camelbak MULE. As I explained in some other threads, never go anywhere exploring or cycling without it. It has the 3 L Bladder that lasts an entire mission. Also keeps my back nice and cool during the hot summer missions. -Mini Mag-Lite with extra batteries. Fits right inside my hydration pack or if I want can fit in my pocket -Plastic Garrity Flashlight. Back-up flashlight in case my one of my other flashlights die. -Regular sized Mag Lite. Usually carry this with me. Use it for light, or something tries to attack me, it will taste the flashlight -Cellular Phone. I have a Motorola I95 CL which is on the Telus Mobility (Mike Network). In most places, especially along the 400 series highway missions, works perfectly. Also have the ability to use the direct-connect push-to-talk option too. -Leatherman Multi-Tool -Camera. Sometimes with tripod depending on the location.

| | | My list is probably about like most others, but a few select things I have found to be very very useful, esp since I tend to hike in rather remote areas a lot:
first-aid kit containing bandages, band-aids, topical Polysporin, topical hydrocotrisone, oral antihistamine, oral Advil, antiburn cream, scapel, hemostats, vaseline. Leatherman Wave . . . and yes, I have been pleased with it. old hemostats . . . very useful for where other pliers won't go Welch-Allyn medical penlight . . . very bright brass (black-coated) flash-light that takes two AAA batteries. Halogen bulb and better than most LED lights I have seen. Tough, too. Welch-Allyn Finoff transluminator: medical instrument that has a very small halogen lamp and a reostat to dim this lamp. Good for when you need a lot of light in a small place or a very dim light in general. All manner of tape. WD-40 in a tiny little can. An extra cellphone body. Mine is an old Motorola which will take the SIM card from my current phone. The idea is if the main phone bites it but the SIM card can be recovered, you've still got a phone. No help if you drop the main phone in a drain, but still. Or should someone try to rob you and asks for your cell, they get the old one.
EDIT: added to list. [last edit 5/20/2005 11:39 AM by Brell - edited 1 times]

| | | So far from what I've read my kit sounds resonable, I'm planing on going to a couple locations soon so I'll have some pics to put up.
1. AOSafety Mask with P100 filters, 2. Sony Cybershot 4.1meg with 512meg stick, 3. 3D Mag-Lite, 4. Columbia LED light with clip (goes good on caps) 5. Ontario "BackRoads" mapbook (do a lot of driving and can't stop to go into places with my wife and kid in the car), 6. 2AA Mag-Lite, 7. East and North Ontario (good for in the cities where I drive), 8. Work Gloves with pads, 9. Gerber Tool (Militry Issued), 10. Gel Pen, 11. Extra batteries (will ad more later), 12. Basic knife (kept very sharp), 13. Glasses cleaner (don't like to be blind), and 14. Sturdy backpack. Anything else I might carry along? I'm sure I'll add more later and do a little setup in the trunk of my car.

| | | Again, I suggest a basic first aid kit, at least with bandages and some sort of antibiotic topical cream. And the WD-40 really is useful, too.

It's great for "loosening up" locks for picking, and you could use it to make hinges less squeaky or something lol ... cleaner ... the better question is what can't it be used for?

| | | It seems to me like carrying around a bulky can of oil will be more of a disadvantage. Maybe it's just me, but I really can't picture myself walking around a building oiling all of the door hinges I come across in order to try to be more stealthy...

There are small cans of wd-40 you can get. It's about an inch in diameter and about 4 inches in height, not too bulky I'd say.

| | | No, it's not bulky at all. I guess there is a slight chance of it leaking in your pack and that would be unpleasent. But I've never had that happen. As for uses, I don't pick locks or use it in that regard, but it's good for cleaning anything metal that needs cleaning or greasing . . . which is a lot of stuff.

In addition to the basic stuff in my first aid kit, I also have a couple of ACE wrap bandages. I'm very clumsy and my ankle sprains easily.
