|  | | | headlamps are terrible when you're exploring with people, trying to have a conversation with a person with the headlamp results in seeing spots for the next few minutes. Plus headlamps just look silly. My vote goes to flashlight, fashion over function my friends.

|  | | | I totally agree with Erin. Having often had my night vision obliterated by other people's headlamps, I definitely prefer flashlights. I'll bring a headlamp but keep it packed until I'm climbing ladders or something. Note that I also prefer active sites, and flashlights go into the pocket or up the sleeve much more quickly than headlamps come off (and headlamp-head goes away).

The Maglite, I find it to be indestrucible, although I've never tried melting it down. My 3D Maglite with an LED insert puts out 75 lumens of light compared to the standard lights that are in the Mags. Whenever I need to climb a ladder, I simply holster my mag, usually there's someone up or below me to provide light. Also, you can shut flashlights off faster in my experience.
Anywho, my choice is flashlights

edit add in - that and after climbing 150 rungs of an old mill with a flashlight in my mouth cured me of flashlights. ;)

I grabbed a rayovac that also does tungsten light and a set of red LEDs that are effective in freaking people out. The light output is somewhat low, in comparison to other products, but I find when you're in a dark situation, you want your eye's pupil to be as wide open as possible and a bright flashlight will make it difficult to see low-light areas or objects. When hitting large patches of sunlight, however, this is not always practical and a stronger light may be more ideal. But let's face it, experience and personal preference are what matter.

| | | | I prefer a big heavy maglite to a headlamp for several reasons.
1) I find it far easier to carry a flashlight. I find it easier to sweep around rooms, shine into corners, and move quickly. I can also hang it on my belt when I'm done with it.
2) It makes a useful tool. I can use it to wedge open doors and windows temporarily, hold stuff down, and I can unscrew the top and sit the thing on a bench to use as a small light if I'm sitting down reading through old files or something. I used it as a hammer once trying to make a makeshift ladder out of rusty old nails and chunks of wood. The ladder was a miserable failure, but the maglite worked admirably as a hammer.
3) Self-defence. If some drug-crazed hobo comes at me, I'd like to have something heavy and effective at hand to defend myself with.
4) It's a tried and tested design. With a few spare bulbs and a set of rechargeable batteries it'll serve me for years and years. I have an innate distrust of LED designs and complicated electronics which go belly-up with a speck of dust or water in the wrong place when a much simpler design will do the same job just as well.

| | | | I like my 5 cell maglight. I havent used a head lamp but I guess they are handy in some situations. Flash lights are easier to control when you need to be low key. A headlamp kind of acts like a lighthouse when you are looking around.
Plus you cant use a head lamp to defend your self against attack. I have only had one run in with a crowbar wielding homeless guy but in the event I need protection My maglight is the weapon on choice.

Tough call. Some environments may be good for a flashlight and some may be good for a headlamp. But I lean towards a head lamp just for safety reasons, It is good to have both hands free at all times.

I have to tend to agree with this. If the location I go to is a 1 storey building, I will usually just carry a flashlight and not worry. But if its a bigger building, I usually keep my mini mag-lite in my pocket, and a headlamp. Just in case something bad happens suddenly, such as a floor caving in, or falling over something,I can react quicker with both hands free.

| | | | I really like my Rayovac two LED headlamp. It's dim enough that it's hard to make out, even when relatively close. I can still see very well (up close) with it though. I never have problems with blinding people, because I turn the light to a downwards angle when I'm wearing it.
All that being said, I also carry a two AA Mag-light, a large 6V, a lighter and a very bright cell phone.
