Location Deletion
< on 3/22/2005 6:08 PM >

Someone deleted one of my locations.

While I realize that it was a location of little or no real explorational value, I should have been warned so that I could have downloaded all of the photos. It was just an office building rooftop.

I didn't even get a PM.

Seems to be a bit of that going around - one of mine has disappeared. Again, no notice or anything, just suddenly not there.
Anyone have an explanation?

It happened to me at one point. Apparently, you don't get an explanation. They don't really need to tell us when they do something. At least, that's what I was told.

Deleting a location without so much as notifying the contributor... that is the epitome of rudeness, no?

How about it Av? Can you add a couple of lines of code to ensure admins send at least a generic message to the originator whenever anything (post, comment, location, pic, etc) is removed?

A little PR effort would go a long way...

It's happened to me too, and apparently they don't give a **** about what we think. And complaining about it does absolutely no damn good. It's like agruing with a stone wall. I am becoming extremely disappointed with this site.

Usually only the following are reasons for a location to be deleted:

- The owner requests it deleted
- The location is out of date and also not a very good location (ie, abandoned field)
- The location hasn't been updated in a long time and also contains very little information
- The owner has removed much of the content of the location

Under most of those circumstances, the deletion is not even noticed or cared about.

I've got no problem with admins deleting locations for valid reason, Av. Lord knows I've seen my share of crap DB entries. I still think the originator of the crap content should be (in all cases) notified when such action is taken. Simply as a common courtesy.

Sorry for making an ass of myself in front of everyone Av. I think i'll just read the forum posts, and keep my opinions to myself from now on.

Thats the idea.

All I want to know is if my photos are recoverable.

Not these pictures... these were old photos from an older computer.

Anything I don't plan on accessing again regularly I just burn to CDR, including old UE pics. As we saw recently, you can't solely rely on your pics being archived online.

The site recompresses and resizes your photos anyway. I wouldn't call it archival. If you really want to back them up, you should have them on at least two different media, and preferably one of them is "dumb" media like a CD-R, DVD-R, or a tape drive.

While you should have no problem saving pictures from live DB locations, UER cannot provide any guarantee that the information and data you provide will be recoverable in the future. UER is not designed to behave as a data storage facility. If the locations were deleted and you didn't manage to keep a backup of your data, there is nothing we can do for you. Sorry.

As for what the status of the location DB entries is, one of the LDB moderators or Av might be able to take the time to offer some insight if you ask it nicely of them.
