| | | | | | Adding Comm sites to the DB < on 3/18/2005 7:19 AM >
| | | I visit a lot of Comm sites, specifically AT&T longlines sites (original longdistance infrastructure) some are abandoned... some are still in use. Would sites like this be just close enough to UE to include in the DB? or should i keep these guys to my own website? Along the same lines, what do people feel about posting sites that may still be sensitive in some way? ("national security", trade secrets, what ever)

| | | This isn't the "official" word of the site, but my personal feelings are that the abandoned sites are cool, but the active sites are probably something you should keep off the net if you don't want to get accosted. Or at the very least veil their information as much as possible. And if you think posting a site might get you a visit from the sinister G-Men, probably just keep it under wraps. | | | Anything to do with infrastructure still in use (Power, Communications, Water treatment, etc) will probably bring you some grief if you're not very very careful. I'd love to see some of what you have, but use discretion in releasing this info unless you want trouble from the feds. I'm not saying it would happen for sure, but some do good is bound to see your material and report it. I once explored an ATT long distance switching station under construction. Massive place and the inside was incredible. But I decided to keep that on the downlow since it's still in use today. Blue

I've been in some LL sites out here too! They are cool - but I haven't had enough luck/pictures to feel worth posting - I'd love to see what you have - put em up!

| | | I think i'll keep them off for the most part. Allot of the sites i only have outside pictures for; and while most of them are no longer doing anything for the gov. they are still active as comm sites in general. Very interesting history though. http://long-lines.net/

| | | Well most of it is only "mostly" abandoned. and i've only been inside one, so you would mostly get nice pictures of old hardened buildings and towers :-p But i can post a couple in the forum when i take some new pictures

| | | truely abandoned ones are very rare, there are 4 or 5 around the bay area as a whole. There are plenty of websites with info on long lines sites.

| | | I took several photographs of an abandoned AT&T communications tower a few weeks back in southern Ohio. While I do not plan to add it to this site, I am curious about the legalities of it. Here is a run down -- It has a large footprint and is painted orange and white. It has an active blinky light at the top but not really much else attached anymore. Ladders have been removed, so replacing the light at the top must require a helicopter. Gate and fence are still there, abeit smashed in places and open. No "No Trespassing" signs. No FCC signs. AT&T concrete structure locked down tight. No way in from what I could tell.

| | | all of the sites that are still active ATT/bell sites are easy to spot because they are still atleast mostly kept up. the rest of them were sold off to american tower mostly, and a few other random sites to other people. I would do a check on the american tower site around the area that you found it, and see if it's registered. Also you can check the FCC DB for tower registration and find the owner out that way. if you PM me lat/long i can do that look up for you. Don't read too much into the blinky later thing, tower climbers can do amazing things
