the ultimate Maglite?

...don't know if anyone here has done this before...

I took a 3D Maglite, modified the switch and reflector, added a Luxeon III LED epoxied to a machined aluminum heatsink, and topped it off with and AR-coated glass lens...

The result is Maglite toughness, with the reliability, brightness (an estimated 80+ Lumens), long life, and smooth beam of a Luxeon III LED.

Here's the heatsink + LED before wiring:

Here's the beam of a regular incandescent 3D Maglite:

Needless to say, I'm quite pleased

How much did it run you? I recently picked up a 4D mag and I've been thinking about a conversion.

and here's a whole list of reviews of LED replacement dropins:

Yeah, I almost got the EverLed drop-in LED, but this way the LED is heatsinked (heatsank? heatsunk?) to the body of the Maglite, so I don't have to worry about the LED overheating (Luxeon LED's give off obscene amounts of heat). Also, it's brighter this way

It really works best with a 3-cell Maglite, but you could still do this with a 4-cell one... here are some instructions I found. Just the LED and heatsink and around $30, plus whatever the cost of wires, thermal epoxy, etc... is.

I could easily make more of these if anyone was interested... I could probably also do a dropin LED "kit" if you already have a 3D Maglite, I'd just have to check on how cheap I can get new Mag internals for.

that's why i'm really fond of this piece:

review: http://www.flashli...amond_magbulbs.htm

Note the the original mag bulb collar is replaced by the bulb assembly; thus, a direct metal connection is made to transfer heat from the bulb down to the rest of the body of the flashlight, and given that maglites are machined aluminum, the heat transfer capability is excellent.

on a side note, look at the output of the luxeon 3 watt lambertian; still focusable, into a rather small beam (compared to many others), and it's over twice the output of the stock incandescant, and you STILL get better battery life.

HOTTT.

Sure they're expensive, but I swear by Surefire LED lights. Their 5-watt luxeon is quite a hot product.
