| | | Don't steal ... I removed my picture, is that what you want? < on 1/16/2005 9:59 PM >
| | | I see this "Don't steal bandwidth" sign all over the place - intuitively it makes sense, but did I miss anything?

| | | Sometimes that shows up if your browser cache or cookies are out of date. Try logging out, clearing those, and logging back in. It's been a problem for people before, there's probably some old threads on this floating around.

| | | Don't take it personally. It is supposed to show up when someone tries to insert a picture that is stored on the UER server into a web page on a different site. That mesage shows up instead of the picture to motivate the person to host the picture themselves somewhere. Try clearing your cache and resetting browser settings like cookies. Maybe you're running through a proxy or something and confusing the server?

| | | Also, don't access the site using an IP address. Instead, always use uer.ca, not 66.207.162.54

Which is an issue that would, seemingly, be quite easy to fix, and would be a huge help to certain people (aka ME) whose ISP's primary nameservers are having problems with UER.ca

Or, you could use your hosts file. That IP is not used exclusively by UER, so UER shouldn't really be on it. -av

| | | or I could add Ns2.ColoGuys.Com to my nameserver list and have it work *properly*, without having to use the HOSTS file. whatever. I was just noting that it might be beneficial for whatever reason to add the IP to the list of "good" referrers so there's less chances of people erroneously getting the "stealing my bandwidth" image. And really, given that you're using a colocation service, I *highly* doubt that others who are hosting off of the same rackmount as you (if any, you might have a dedicated!) are going to be making attempts to hotlink your images.

| | | There are other web sites hosted off the same server. Perhaps you shouldn't play the I-know-it-all game when in fact you know nothing.

I may not know everything, but I know enough to talk. My point still stands; is it very unlikely that others who are hosting off of the rackmount unit at 66.207.162.54 are going to be hotlinking your images and abusing your bandwidth, thus, it would be safe to add the IP address to the 'trusted referrers' list, and cutting back on the chances that the "bandwidth thief" image would come up erroneously. It really doesn't matter to me, I got the named address to resolve just fine without your help. At least you were civil when I asked you if the IP had changed recently.

| | | You don't understand. First, the others who are hosted at this IP are under my control, since I run the server. Second, since there is more than one site hosted on this IP, I use the HTTP 1.1 "Host" protocol for virtual domains to allow this to function. As such, there is no site located at 66.207.162.54. -av

| | | Well, there is not longer a site at 66.207.162.54. Before today, it defaulted to the UER.ca site, regardless of any other sites that you may happen to host off of the same unit. Thanks for playing.
