Distribution of members

Av, is it possible to show a breakdown of where the membership of the forums are from ? I'm curious about how it splits in terms of numbers geographically. Can you give some statistics based on country ? Or even more ambitiously, by province/state as well ?

This would be pretty hard to do unless Av has an easy way to figure out what region a person is from based on their IP address or something. Not everyone enters location information in their profile and those that do don't follow any kind of standard, so some people are from "k-dub", some are from "Pig's eye" and others are "where you aren't" or something.

Obviously we'd only be getting data from people that actually put ina valid location. It's just to satisfy curiousity, not a government census or anything... Just to get an idea of our distribution is all.

Using the "USER SRCH" feature there seems to be at least 40 people from the state of Virginia, USA.

Well, um ... Maybe not even "valid" locations. For example:
Xanga asks their users to select a general area from a list, and then it narrows from there, and they either end up clicking on their already-listed city, or typing in the name of their city.

Either way, if somebody had enough time on their hands (or could copy the Xanga code/DB/whatever, I don't know), you could do something like that.

I mean... people can still lie -- there's about 50 billion members on Xanga from Vietnam, whatever. But if they want to be associated with one area, they can, that way. Otherwise, people that move around a lot or are in college may cause you a little trouble, if you track them based on IPs, etc.

Well, that's what Emma thinks. And she doesn't know much, but yes. Anyway.

Sorry, I probably forgot my <sarcasm> tags.
