Radon - A Dangerous Gas !

What is Radon? and Where does it come from?

Radon comes from the natural (radioactive) breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water and gets into the air you breathe. Radon can be found all over the U.S. It can get into any type of building - homes, offices, and schools - and result in a high indoor radon level. But you and your family are most likely to get your greatest exposure at home, where you spend most of your time.

Moved to the tutorials/info section. From what I've read (and what Roadwolf said), Radon is more dangerous when you are exposed to it over time, small doses are not as bad but can still contribute to health problems.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Radon isn't really a concern at an abandonment unless you spend a few years straight there. It's much more of a concern in your home where you spend a lot of time. I believe the gas rises inside the ground, but is somewhat trapped by the topmost layers of soil. I live in a house on top of a hill, so the radon theoretically collects in a pocket beneath my foundation. The cracks in my basement floor are all caulked carefully and the sump is sealed shut with tape, both precautions directly relating to radon buildup over time.

The only places I know of that would pose an immediate danger are abandoned uranium mines or poorly ventilated mines in uranium rich areas. I think the only significant uranium deposits in north america are in Utah.

Not quite. Around 1/3rd of the world's uranium production comes from northern Saskatchewan.

True, Canada is one of the lead Uranium-producing countries of the world, far more than the US but you don't need a huge deposit for lethal radon, just a few stones' worth.

Anyways, radon is something to be feared mainly in a closed cellar more than anything. The gas seeps in through the cellar and can build up... Nothing I'd usually be afraid of (or even think of) though, it affects you over thousands of hours, not one or two.

Isnt radon in smoke detectors. I think I read that in the article about that kid who made a homemade breeder reactor.

Nope, no radon in smoke detectors as far as I know. Just an alpha-source (americium)

Your thinking of radium. That's what was originally used in smoke detectors before they switched to americium.

A few years ago, I heard a story about high levels of radon in the Buckingham,QC area (near Ottawa,ON). The radon source was purely natural and the specialists were saying is no short-term danger and it is limited on the long term basis.

If you have ventilation under your house you are usually safe. If you have a house sitting right on the ground or one with a basement, it would be good to have good ventilation within the house. The tigher the air seal of your home, the high chance of higher concentrations of radon sticking around in your air.

You can get radon detectors which are similar to smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. It'll warn you if you the concentration gets too thick. Visit your local hardware store...
