I always wondered why (like with most phpbb sites) UER.ca doesn't send out an email letting you know you have a new UER private message?
I can't imagine it would be that hard to do, or that strenuous on the server.
Like a lot of people, I come and go throughout the day on the forums... getting an email that I had a new PM would get my attention a lot faster than just checking back now and again...
Why not make this an added feature of the premium membership?
As it stands, I don't use any of the other features, but this would definitely be a nice bonus.

| | | | This sounds logical to me. There is already the big banner and the audal announcement, but those don't really do much for people that aren't seated at the same computer all day with the forum sitting idling in the background. It should be pretty painless to code, too.
I wouldn't use it, but I'm in favor of it.

haha! You sound just like two out of three clients that call me at work (I develop for an overly elaborate Access interface and run phone tech support for same). Every time someone calls to get a quote on some custom work, they simply can't believe that they're the only person/company that wants a report or form just like what they described. "What do you mean nobody's ever asked for this before? That can't be true!" and so on...

The system sends out automatic notifications once an hour, on the hour. So if you get a PM, you won't see the email until up to an hour later.

Okay, so *if* you get an email, does it only send one?
Does the code flag you as already receiving an email and then not send another?
What about if you get a PM, then an email, then 2 hours later you get another PM?
Does it send a second email?

Now, if you REALLY wanted to be crafty, here's an idea...
Make a simple program, you could no doubt do it in VB or something similar that would run in your taskbar. Whenever someone replies in a thread you mark (perhaps combine it with the "Mark as a favourite thread"), or you get a PM, it would pop up a window telling you, and/or change colours. Back in the day, you had a green round "logo" on the site...you could use that - it'd normally stay green then when you get a PM or whatever, it would turn red.
I don't know how hard that would be to code, but I think it'd be a pretty nifty idea, especially for people who don't browse the site all the time.

In other words, it may somewhat compromise the site's security and I don't think we need anyone hacking in and fucking stuff up so we can find out exactly when someone sends us a message.

It's just a personal preference, I prefer e-mail notifications to be opt-in rather than opt-out.
