Hotel Tips?
< on 12/6/2004 2:19 AM >

Hey all,

I'm new, and actually only discovered UE a little while ago. I found this site while looking for tip on how to sneek extra guests into hotels (roadtrip comin up). So I'm not really into abandoned places or anything, but I love hotels and offices. Any tips on getting past reception at hotels? Any good excuses/ stories to tell employees? Any other general tips on public buildings?

While I have NO idea what this has to do with ANYTHING UE-related... the answer is simple:

Dress like a business traveller.
Walk around like you're supposed to be there.
Go to the Hotel bar first.

If you walk in there dressed like a teenager, raver, goth, or whatever sub-culture you (and I don't mean YOU specifically) subscribe to... you're going to probably get a look.

If you look like someone that's supposed to be there, they won't even give you a second look.

I'm exploring buildings in urban areas. I think that qualifies as urban exploration.

When I travel to Maine with my family every year, we have to sneak our dog into hotels.

Our dog, Sera, is a large, white, standard poodle. And the goofiest dog on the planet. We will often just walk in, and they won't notice or care. Once, I pretended to be blind with a seeing-eye dog. That doesn't answer your question, does it.

But, yeah, talk on a cell phone. They won't bother you, because you're too important and busy to be bothered. Or ask when breakfast will no longer be served.

Sometimes, you need to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who it is you're talking to. Then, on your way out, slam the door.

During my travels, I've had to (for business reasons believe it or not ) sneak people in a number of times, and if the hotel has a back/side door or private entrance I suggest you use that method.

Easy, tiger. No need to be a jackass. I misread what you typed.
I thought you were asking HOW to sneak guests into hotels, not that you got here by searching for one.

I suggest you read Ninjalicious' article on the Royal York Hotel on infiltration.org for general advice for sneaking around hotels.

Exactly. Most larger hotels have several side entrances to the building that can only be entered with the door card. Go through there. People have large hotel parties fairly often, but I'd still recomend against having 10 people bumming around at the same time.

Most smaller shops have the office apart from many of the rooms. Just use caution and walk through the door.

As far as actually exploring them. Just walk around. Look confident while going in most places. If you are in a back area just play dumb. "Where's the pool?" If it's a major chain you might want to start looking for cards. People lose them around all the time. You just find them laying in the street sometimes. They won't usually get you into rooms, but for most employees it should be proof enough that you are staying there.

If you want to this, you can just buy a deactivated card on ebay if you want to pretend to be a guest.

El Nerdo, no offense intended man, I was just trying to be as clear as possible. And thanks everyone else for the tips, I like the old card idea alot.

So in all these fancy hotels you just stroll past the desk and up the elevator, amazing.

I have lived/been in dozens of hotels this last year. I snuck my friend in the room this weekend. Anyways just remember not to make tons of noise, and if you have to go by a main desk go a small group at a time. You wont have a problem. That not only goes for your hotel issues but with exploring them. As for receptions, not sure depends on the spot. Have one go in and check doors going out?

Kid Sparkle got me to do a hotel infiltration about a week ago, and it was a freaking blast. Seems like the biggest thing is just to exude confidence. If you look like you know you're supposed to be there, then the staff will barely notice you.

Hell, me and Sparkle were covered in mud from exploring other stuff that night, and no one gave us a second look because we just waltzed in like we owned the place.

As WR said. It's all about confidence. Whenever people are busy doing their jobs or trying to look like they are doing their jobs they won't give you any thought. I once even surprised some hotel staff in a laundry room who were all standing around laughing and talking (obviously not working) and they all promptly left the area as soon as they saw me. I really think they thought I was with management and going to yell at them, you should have seen the looks on their faces.

The easiest way I think you could get yours friends in is by saying there just visiting for a couple moments, or in areas that I live in they have underground or inside parking lots that lead stright to an elevator, bring them in that way.

Maybe you should take some tips on how to lie as well!

Always have a story.

1. Don't say "um"
2. Don't gesture with your non-dominant hand.
3. Don't stroke your face, chin, neck, or other arm.
4. Don't go on the defensive!
5. Be polite, but have a shitload of lies on hand.
6. Maintain eye-contact
7. Don't mutter.

.... that should be convincing enough!

Remember, if you can convince yourself that your story is true, you can even pass a lie detector test.

Polygraphs are lame anyway...

Only the unknown frightens one. But once one has faced the unknown, that terror becomes the known.

Or.. if you know someone that works for a restaurant that delivers... borrow their uniform and/or bags.

I deliver pizza and RARELY even get a glance from the front desk help when going into a hotel. I waltz in wearing my Papa Johns uniform and they don't even look up *shrug*. When they do I just throw out a "hey how's it goin?" and they usually ignore me.

Your urban exploration style is called "infiltration". The best trick is acting as you belong there and know what you're doing there. If that's a businessmen style hotel and you're looking old enough to be one of them, wear a suit. When you work in the hospitality industry's big player, you see so many people that you don't recognize them all the time. So, do as you return to your room after a meeting. Also, you should explore during nights and early mornings since that's the busiest and most usual time for guest traffic. Afternoons are more quiet and your presence will make you more suspecious in several hotels.

I've done plenty of hotel infiltrations in CT and NY.

As everyone said, the key is to look like you're supposed to be there. Hell, sometimes I wave at the staff members.

I've scored some free snacks from business meetings as well just passing through. Fun stuff to kill curiosity but that's about it for me.

If you're ever in NYC, hotels are easy.

Since you're not from around here anyway, you'll automatically be a tourist. Wear a camera around your neck, look around curiously at everything, and when you go inside, go straight for the elevator.

That's what I do. Greet employees before they greet you, and don't walk away when you see someone approaching. Don't let them think you have something to hide.

Oh, and the best part about hotels is eating and drinking their food for free. Oh yeah. Tribeca and Grand Hotels here have coffee machines on every floor. Enjoy.

By and large, hotel employees don't care who's in the building as long as they're not making their jobs more difficult, by trashing meeting rooms or stealing stuff. Personally, I don't care how many people you have in your room as long as you're not having a huge party (because I get noise complaints and that makes my job more difficult). I've only worked for smaller hotels (under two hundred rooms) but I have explored a three thousand room resort with no problems. If you're caught somewhere you shouldn't be, the best excuse is to say that you're scouting the hotel for a meeting/wedding reception/etc. The employees will treat you well because they think you might bring in money. If they ask why you were in the laundry room, say you got lost. However, don't say "The front desk clerk told me it was okay." because employees do talk to one another. Don't run away if you see someone coming toward you. Wave and say hello. If you run, that means that person will probably chase you (making their job more difficult). If you wave and say hi, that person will probably ask if you need any help and send you on your way.

I want someone to infiltrate my hotel. It would give me something to do. "Sorry, I need to show this guy the creepy elevator room, be right back!"
