Historic American Engineering Record (good info and historic photos of places all over the US)

Some backround: I am trying to gain access to a very exposed canada dry bottling plant in Silver Spring maryland, On a whim I decide to talk with the silver spring historical society, they put me in touch with the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commision (MNCPPC). I got a phone call from a very nice lady on the historic preservation board who was very enthusiastic about my desire to photograph the Canada Dry Bottling plant and has offered to be my escort when I want to photograph the site!!! (The MAN is helping me go UE'ing?!?! wow!)

She informed me of a National Parks project called the Historic American Building Survey/Historic American Engineering Record (HABS/HAERS). Basically HABS/HAERS seeks to to document and preserve Americas diverse architectural and engineering history through photography, blueprints, and written records. The HABS/HAERS documents which are avaliable for the public to see at the library of congress.

Quite an interesting turn of events, and I must say this is an awesome program. Check out HABS/HAERS at www.cr.nps.gov/habshaer

I just spent over an hour sifting through this site. Incredible amount of imformation and really great old photos. I wish the collection extended more into the stuff besides buildings, bridges, and dams though.

That site rules! I'd been meaning to go to Kennicott but now I'm definitely going to go this summer if at all possible, their photos of the place are just incredible (might have to cut and paste):

http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/ampage?collId=hhphoto&fileName=ak/ak0000/ak0003/photos/browse.db&action =browse&recNum=0&title2=Kennecott%20Copper%20Corporation,%20On%20Copper%20River%20%26%20Northwestern% 20Railroad,%20Kennicott,%20Valdez-Cordova%20Division,%20AK&displayType=1&itemLink=D?hh:12:./temp/~amm em_apUa::

Plus they have dredges, mines, old military sites, and a few photos that were obviously taken by climbing up on old bridges and into other dodgy locations, those photographers must be UE'rs at heart! Maybe they'll hire me...

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

SWEEEET. I could have used that last night while researching. I'm going to call them and see what kind of places they can get me into. Tucson is about to knock down some really cool stuff and I'm kind of pissed that nobody else seems to care.

Hey, thanks for the bump. This is really some good stuff. When they say a document was compiled "After 19XX", does anyone know if that really means it was compiled near that time or just that it may have been 1999 and they don't have accurate info?

Not all the info is current. Read the data sheets, they'll give the dates of the photos. Less than half the sites listed for Dutch Harbor are still there, since they surveyed the place in 1985.
