| | | Well, generally speaking, any radio-scanner will do. It depends where you live though. If I recall correctly, Montreal City Police are using a digital encrypted system, which means you are SOL to listen to them. QPP use a Digital system that isn't encrypted, so you CAN listen to them, but you need a expensive (over 2 thousand dollars) radio to do so - and such radios aren't really that legal without a license. But, generally speaking, any scanner will do. RadioShack isn't the best place to shop for one mind you. Personally, my favourite radio would be an Icom R-2 receiver. It's got 500 memories, excellent coverage, as far as frequency range...1.5 to 1000 MHz, so you can hear EVERYTHING on this sucker. The best part, is that it's about half the size of a pack of smokes.
Any questions, ask away. -Ex

| | | That first link you have is a Ham (amatuer) walkie-talkie, you can use it as a scanner but you're really paying for the Amatuer-band tranciever which isn't really useful unless you have the license for it. The second one looks to be the best, continuous coverage over most of the currently used frequencies, plus trunk tracking, means you'll be able to hear everything available (except maybe scrambled or encoded military transmissions). Trunking recievers can pick up the newest police and government radio systems. Third one is a good general use portable scanner, it's similar to what I use but the trunking is a nice extra. There are a few gaps in it's coverage but you can pick up standard Police and Fire, amatuer, CB, Marine, weather, aircraft, etc. Edit: didn't read the product description fully [last edit 6/15/2003 9:49 PM by Freak - edited 1 times]

| | | It looks like one of those old multi-band AM/FM/CB/Police radios compressed into a portable case. There's probably no scanning circuit so you'd have to select the band you wanted and then tune manually with a knob to find signals, you'd then only be able to listen to the specific frequency you had tuned in. I'd imagine you could find something better for around the same price on ebay or at a pawn shop, even a scanner with only 10 memory channels would be better.

| | | I was thinking of getting a scanner too, only today while doing research into police radio here I found out that they're right in the middle of a huge nationwide replacement with this full digital encrypted network system, http://www.airwaveservice.co.uk/. Looks like I've missed the boat for police scanning

| | | If you're in montreal you should be checking radioshack.ca since the US versions of scanners have cell blocked. Rather than paying a retarded amount of money for a new scanner check some local pawn shops. The radio shack pro-43 and the pro-25 are very nice handheld scanners for anything analog. If you're looking for something to scan trunked radio signals have a look at radioworld.ca. They have some sales on used equipment sometimes. The top two listed here are pretty awesome rigs: http://www.radioworld.ca/swscan/icom.php#r3 The icom r3 can scan for wireless video camera's, that could come in handy for UE.
