They dug a hole, (I forget how deep) inserted a small nuclear bomb into it, and covered the hole with a manhole cover. The force of the explosion was such that the manhole cover was launched not into the orbit of the earth, or of the sun, but straight into space itself, where, presumably, it still is. From the animated reconstruction, the manhole cover looked like your everyday spiderwebber, except with a big radioactive symbol on the top. Dr. Karl did tell us how much the cover weighed, but I missed some of that because I was busy telling the ten year old boy I was watching television with at the time to 'Shut up, this is really interesting.'
