Did you know ...

"According to Dr. Karl Kruszelniscki, (advice on how to spell that will be taken kindly) the first thing ever launched into space from earth was... wait for it! A Manhole Cover! Apparently after everyone noticed that above ground nuclear testing was stoopid, in the mid 1950's, the first underground nuclear test took place in Nevada. They dug a hole, (I forget how deep) inserted a small nuclear bomb into it, and covered the hole with a manhole cover. The force of the explosion was such that the manhole cover was launched not into the orbit of the earth, or of the sun, but straight into space itself, where, presumably, it still is.

From the animated reconstruction, the manhole cover looked like your everyday spiderwebber, except with a big radioactive symbol on the top. Dr. Karl did tell us how much the cover weighed, but I missed some of that because I was busy telling the ten year old boy I was watching television with at the time to 'Shut up, this is really interesting.'

The article in the Good Weekend about 2 years ago regarding this stated that
it was the fastest solid, non energy based object ever created by man. It weighed 230kg.

The speed calibrators at the mouth of the pit clocked the lid at approx. 200
times the speed of sound. At its speed and angle its estimated it would have lost 12% of its speed upon breaching the atmoshphere and would have passed out of our solar system 6 years ago. "

(extract from an e-mail I received forwarded from various sources,
I have made some spelling corrections to the original e-mail)

STAY COOL!!!
Keep cool by being a part of the stupid Adelaide Clan antics ...
