As has been said, popping manholes frombelow is generally a stupid idea. I have to admit to doing it a few times and will give advice from my experiences doing this. Aside from taking into account the obvious things like trying to guess where you are (residential, busy, day, night etc..) you want to stop and listen very carefully for several minutes. You can 'USUALLY' hear vehicles. Pehaps put your ear to the shaft wall (a dirty ear is better than a crushed skull). If you decide it is safe enough to try to lift use basic common sense. Keep your head a good distance below street level (preferably more the the radius of the cover). Do not lock your elbows when lifting. Keep your hands away from the edges. Make sure you have a solid footing. Be fast. Listen carefully before sticking your head up. All of this is pretty obvious stuff. It comes down to not taking this issue lightly. Please do not take my advice as a recomendation to start lifting covers. Follow the advice above when deciding whether or not to lift one. If you must, do it cautiously.

While on a recent trip to a local cave we exited through a manhole. While I was on the bottom waiting for the guy up top to pop the cover I thought back to the flat "wonderbar" that sits in the bottom of my toolbox. It's the best tool I've found for removing the Drum from a car during a brake job. The bar has a curved end with and a flat end. It's about 2 inches wide and about 10 inches long. There is a hole near the curved end of the bar that is meant for poping nails. I've been thinking about the similarities of a manhole cover and the brake drum on my car. Either a rope or a piece of cable attached to the nail hole, and some kind of handle that could move up or down as needed. If you jammed it in between the cover and the lip, and then climbed down, you think it'd pop? Still have to lift, but this would be useful for loosening the cover. Of course, bringing this tool out for just any exploration would be pretty stupid. I'm sure law enforcement would call that burglary tools. However for those oh so pesky covers, decrepit ladders or slimy nasty in-sewar covers it might be useful.

Sometimes they're just unopenable, so don't wreck your back trying to open it A lot of the manholes on my campus are either paved over, welded shut, or just buried under a lot of dirt and rocks.

Alot of the times they're tared shut too with good ol tar.
