Anybody know anything about 2.4 Gigahertz wireless video cameras around the city. My buddy has just boosted a receiver and can now pick up video around the city. We plan to map out all the street light cameras and such.

He found one today that was in a residential area and only broadcast about 50 feet. This doesn't make any sense to me.

Wow, I didn't know those traffic cams were wireless. Can you connect to them with a laptop - like a regular wireless connection, or does this require special equipment?

I'd guess the camera would just be somebody's personal one, maybe they can go online during the day and see what it looks like out there window, or as a homemade burglar system possibly. Or to spy on their whore of a wife...

The one I'm referring to is actually at Ayd Mill and Hamline. There are two, one in each direction of traffic. They are wireless on the 2.4 band. (as, I'm told, are the other cameras). He uses a small TV, and the receiver for his mini 'spy cam'. He has modified the receiver with a home made antena, but that is all.

Big Blue monstrosity here we go. Not the best shot since the lights were green (one time I WANT to be stopped at a red) but this is it...

Just extends like that down the alley... Never been down the alley to investigate further, maybe next time I'm walking in the area.

Very interesting, so he is just using a 2.4 band reciever to view this, there doesn't seem to be any encryption or anything huh? I've been meaning to pickup a set of transmitter and reciever for my own little local TV station to share with my neighbors, now I have another reason. I assume the cams broadcast to a little box nearby, using wireless would make installation easier on street lamps I assume.

Yup, just a 2.4 gigahertz receiver. He added a cheap 2.4 wifi extender antena and replicated the stock copper sheet antena at many times it's size. It gets pretty good reception.

We went out the other day and drove around. I looked at the cameras on the street lights. They are just the large white boxy cameras you see all over, but they have a small multi-directional antena comming out the back instead of wires. My guess is it was easier to run wireless to a local box than wired, but all the other one's in the city are wired. (atleast what we've seen so far) As soon as I get my uplink cable back I'll have a picture to post up.

We also managed to find a few other places with cameras including many homes, a warehouse and a local restaraunt. None of it is encrypted. I believe many individuals and small businesses pick up X-10 style cameras as cheap and easy security. Apparently all the basic wireless cameras transmit on 4 signals. We just switched between the 4 signals repeatedly and looked for video comming through. SOme of them came with audio as well.

Have you ever wondered about the paint markings made by utility and construction crews on the asphalt? It's like a secret code, and actually points to a whole different world below your feet.

Wired magazine explains the markings in this article:

I want to use other people's webcams to capture the moment the streetlights go ON, but these website owners have made it difficult to capture the pictures automatically:
http://www.hofpleincam.nl/common/frameset_high.html
http://www.vid.nl/Camera/show/cam_13

The picture gets a new name each time it is shown. Like: http://www.vid.nl/...ummy=1100210622832

And it is shown using a javascript function:
<img name="camImage" src="http://www.vi...mageCamera/cam_13">
<img name="camPrepare" width="1" height="1" onLoad="showImage()">

So I cannot use the standard grabbers like "wget" (I tried, it doesn't work.)
Do you have any ideas?

Wow, the video a signal eavesdropping is rather interesting. Have you ever heard of the Surveillance Camera Players? (http://www.notbored.org/the-scp.html)

I agree that UE leads to a much greater appreciation for the structure of the city around you, or perhaps that appreciation leads to UE. Who's to say? They certainly bolster each other.

Hmmm. Too brain fried to offer up much other than that right now...

Just a few random observations:

1) Most manholes have a date in Rotterdam. That allows you to determine when an area was built - or heavily renovated. The ones in my area are from 1965.

2) Almost everything has a code or number. I was looking today : streetlights, lampposts, billboards, dustbins on central station, bridges, streetsign poles.

3) There are less and less of those public digital thermometers / clocks that were fun to compare (hey, here it's one degree warmer).

4) Some trees lose their leaves quicker on one side than the other. Haven't been able to make out a pattern in this.

5) Magpies come in pairs. This morning they were busy with the horse droppings in the city park. Yuck!

6) The lights of the highway go out much later than the normal streetlights. They have some other control. I wonder if they go out in the whole Netherlands at once.

7) This morning we had out first freezing night. This morning there was still some frost left. Mostly on wood (good thermal insulator?) and on shed roofs (why?). Although there was no sun some buildings seemed to produce a "thermal shadow" where the frost stayed longer.

8) Seagulls look silly when they stomp on the grass to flush out the earthworms. (wonder why this works at all - but they all do it).

9) Riding on a bicycle lane - wet, fallen leaves - I sometimes heard the sound of another cyclist behind me. But I saw no one. In the dark city park this was a bit disturbing. Finally I realized that it was the echo of my own tyre sound that was reflected off branches above my head. I only heard it under the trees.

10) Last weekend we had some very, very red sunsets. I wonder if that has something to do with the volcanic eruption in Iceland.

11) Christmas decorations and trees (inside) have appeared quite unexpectedly.

I found a "partner in crime" - read this longish - but interesting report:

After the conclusion of my art study at the Cologne University I worked as an art teacher in the morning. In the afternoon I took workshops at the Cologne Public School as a secondary study. I rode the same underground line several times a day and in the long run these rides became a boring monotonous ritual.

One day I decided to turn this boredom into a performance: A full work-day (eight hours) of underground driving, on this one line. Maybe this conscious experiencing of monotony would lead to a feeling of "ecstatically increased commonplaceness". I planned my action for 8 February 1978 and announced it by distributing leaflets in the workshops. A friend and a fellow student, Thomas F. Fischer, joined me and rode along for eight hours.

From time to time we took a coffee break at a kiosk or in the "McDonald's" at the Barbarossaplatz. The toilet of the "McDonald's" restaurant had a sober, white tiling and a cold neon light. "That is a place in Andy Warhol style", said Fischer. “A completely impersonal place, banal, sad, casual and exchangeable.”

2) Almost everything has a code or number. I was looking today : streetlights, lampposts, billboards, dustbins on central station, bridges, streetsign poles.
An interesting booklet in this respect, unfortunately in Dutch, is 7 op de schaal van Richter en andere getallen (& on the Richter scale and other numbers) which briefly explains all sorts of codes found in daily lige, from the richter scale to street numbering (Highways ending in a 0 run East-west, ending in a 5 run North-south or something similar).

3) There are less and less of those public digital thermometers / clocks that were fun to compare (hey, here it's one degree warmer).
We always had 2 within 200 metres from each other, one at about 5 metres and the other on a 25 metre high pole. They usually differed 2 or more degrees, the higher one being cooler during the day and warmer during the night.

In this respect: I've found a free scale. You can measure anything that fits on it within 20kg accurately, my bike and me weigh 100kg, and I can reach 120 when I jump. It has a 5-digit display with the first only capable of a one, so maybe it goes up to 19980 kg. Unfortunately I don't posess a 20-ton truck to test.

4) Some trees lose their leaves quicker on one side than the other. Haven't been able to make out a pattern in this.
Leaking city gas lines cause trees to lose their leaves earlier. This is caused by ethylene gas, also radiated by bananas (tip: if you hav non-ripe fruit, tie it in a plastic bag with a banana, and it'll be ripe within hours to a day, depending on the fruit).

6) The lights of the highway go out much later than the normal streetlights. They have some other control. I wonder if they go out in the whole Netherlands at once.
They are remote controlled by the TIC (Traffic Information Centre/Center) - the same you found the webcam of the highway on.

8) Seagulls look silly when they stomp on the grass to flush out the earthworms. (wonder why this works at all - but they all do it).
They simulate raindrops falling - that's what I've been told.

I rode on a friends bike a few days ago which has mountainbike tires which make a very distinctive "zooming" sound, which makes me think there is a car right behind me.

I have a very simple tone on my cellphone. Nokia calls it "frog" and people have asked why my phone only vibrates, (as I write this my phone rings ... speaking about the devil, eehm. gf) but it makes this sound. I hear this almost always, except when I'm cycling past the field with all the crows, then I mistake the sound for a crow.

Speaking of which - My parents *only* call when I'm having sex (and no, I'm not having sex all the time) which usually breaks us both out of the mood.

11) Christmas decorations and trees (inside) have appeared quite unexpectedly.
I haven't seen much yet. Matter of tradition? I live in Limburg. Will pay attention as I bike to work tonight.

Tijmen

P.S. I hate the new spellcheck. I'll bitch about it in the "forum issues" phorum.

Today the streetlights went on with a flash at 16:45:22
at 16:45:45 they were all almost yellow (they start white) except for a side street were they were still in the pink at about 16:46:50 (the last I could see them)

And I saw 4 christmas wreaths on the way to work, 3 on the door and one brown one hanging next to the door (probably last years'). I also saw one christmas three with lights, but that was in a flower store. And I saw people watching TV. A red-clothed man with a long white beard was on, but I suppost that was Sint Nicolaas.

So Limburg is not in Chrismas Mood yet.

Last week I had a train at 16:30 and could compare all the streetlights in The Hague, Vlaardingen and Rotterdam while driving through their territories.

1) There is a different timing for different areas of Rotterdam. Neighboring streets can have streetlights on versus off.

2) Even sections of highway have different timings. There is no central control for the whole network

Now - is this Urban Landscape Hacking, Urban Debugging or Urban Reverse Engineering ?

Have you noticed that the sodium lights first turn pink (nice colour too!) and only later turn yellow? First the neon starts to glow and only later does the sodium vapor kick in.

My favorite strip mall setup had a Christian bookstore sandwiched between "Pirate Rock and Roll" and "The bad boy clothing connection" whose logo was a devil head.

I think it's interesting to find stores which cater to certain subcultures, for example in Toronto there was a store that just sold spray paint and grafitti magazines (I didn't know they had magazines, apparently taggers have sold out). Here in Fairbanks there's one store that tries to cater to as many bored teen subcultures as they can at once. We call it the "Hippy Ninja Store" since it sells knives, martial arts supplies, bongs, blacklights and other stoner accessories, and porn.

Theres a parking lot in Towson that I use a lot, right between some large apartment buildings, and off on one side of it is a little fenced off patch of grass with a single grave in it. I've been walking past this thing for like a year and it always caught my eye, but it wasn't until tonight that I finally decided to take a close look at it.

The grave belongs to Catherine Schmuck, who lived from 1767-1831 and was the wife of Solomon Schmuck. There were more words below, but it was too dark to read them and I didn't have a flashlight(you should always carry one, just in case!). I'm sure that wherever Mrs. Schmuck is right now, she'd be glad to know a stranger took the time to visit her grave.
