Sugggestions: Firefox Extension for UEDB // Proximity Map Addition

I was thinking and I figured it'd be cool if there was a UEDB Engine for the upper-bar of firefox (such as the google, dictionary.com, urbandictionary and rottentomatoes add-ons). That way you could type in a location in the bar, and then be directed to a results page within the database.

Also, another suggestion I've had for a while, and I forget if I posted, was a map-quest like tool. You could input information of a location and it would give you some sort of location on a map, and give the proximity for a location you live in, or will be in. This would be especially helpful for those planning trips on a very UE heavy route (ala New England, etc.) as they could then realize what locations are possible visits. It'd be cool too.

I'm unsure if either of these suggestions are pheasible or workable, but I figured I might as well suggest them.

This idea has been tossed around before, and it was decided that (despite the fact that it would be pretty nifty), it is not a good idea because it basically pinpoints places for people. These people could be photographers and curious people that like to look around, but they could just as easily (if not more easily) be vandals, taggers, arsonists, thieves, etc. that are looking for a place to practice their respective crafts.

I don't like this for the same reason that I don't like the idea of adding fields to the DB for GPS coordinates. If you can print a map that takes you to the asylum's doorstep right from the internet and see exactly what equipment you'll need and what precautions to take, this is no longer anything close to exploring. I would much prefer something more along the lines of "Here are pictures of an asylum in [city]. Go find it." than "The [name of asylum] is at 24d18m32s 16d25m19s and requires a #7 torx to remove three screws from the second window on the southeastern wall of the main building. bring a respirator, waders for the flooded tunnels, meat for the guard dogs and rappelling gear or a long rope ladder for the well." I'm not against people sharing information amongst friends and people they trust, but it would be easy to take things too far.

See what I mean?

Well, I knew that would be a problem, so I was meaning something much more vague.

A simple map for an entire state or something that would have thumbtack like icons over cities and areas with locations, which when clicked would lead into the section for the DB. It would be less:

"turn left, 0.1 miles
Turn right
continue 36.7 miles"

And more like just a map that could show hotspots. Though, that might be far less helpful. I guess by that point it'd be an excercise in futility, as the work put into it would amount to little use.

[Edit: I enjoy the exploration as well, but there's a slight difference between finding a location when you have the luxury, and being on a road trip and needing at the very least a vague idea of what's in the neighbourhood.

But yes, I see your point So I guess that idea can be nixed.

To address the point of out-of-town exploring... I think the best policy here is to contact the author of the location and see if they're interested in telling you how to get there. Hell, you might even meet new people. That's been the policy with my LDB entries.

I'm not trying to poo on the initial idea, only the idea of having directions of any kind in the LDB.

The idea for a small map depicting the location is somewhat intriguing. But if it cannot be done, then oh well. Still sounds pretty cool.
