Part one; http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=20472 and part two; http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=20111 It's a great place; no graff to speak of. 1850's Smelter, 1940s Titanium plant; in the middle of nowhere. The Fall colors make it a great time to go up there and there. 'Dukes [last edit 10/14/2004 7:35 AM by 'Dukes - edited 1 times]

| | | I made time to peruse the two locations you mentioned, 'Dukes. All I can say is... Wow! An abandoned mine, smelter, village, and a museum to boot. I know where I'm going camping next summer. But what's the meaning of the term "redevelopment" though? There doesn't seem to be much of anything going on at the mine. Oh and I take back my "spelt rong" comment. I've surfed the web a bit and that "c" seems to come and go as it pleases. Great entries, guys. This place is definitely worthy of an extended visit.

| | | This place is indeed amazing. The mine in particular. For a ghost town, Adirondack is about the best I've seen - out west you can rarely, if ever, find a group of more than 2-3 decent abandoned houses without any active ones very close by. Gilman is better, I guess, but other than that Adirondack is pretty damn cool.
I want to be different. But I want to be different just like everybody else, because if I really were different, everybody would think I was crazy and weird. Iowa is Minnesota's bitch. There's an art to pooping. |

| | | The Adirondack museum is actually in Blue mountain Lake NY, and it's got a great "mining" exhibit. The Adirondac(k) title for the town is subject ; it was originally mispelled when the village was named. Adirondac was started in the 1850's by Mr. Macynitre. The smelter is one of the only structures of it's kind in the country. Titanium found in the ore "a contaminant". With no rail line to this remote location, the shop closed up after twenty five years or so. In the early 1900's, the Tahawus club, (see Ted Rooseveldt story) was formed , and those buildings you see are the remnants of that club, except; in the forty's the nearby property was liscenced to national lead (aka Dutch boy paint) to extract the titanium dioxide pigment, formerly considered a contaminant to iron ore! And the houses at the Tahawus club reused to house employees for NL. The rest lived at Tahawus. Thus the Macyntire redevelopment! 150 years of history! Interestingly, Tahawus, where the NL plant sits, was completely moved to nearby Newcomb when another vein of Ore was found! Yeah this place has a twisted history, but it's very cool. The houses at Adirondac are pretty beat, but the furnace is cool, and NL industries mine is awesome. An industrial giant in the middle of the Adirondack park! Even rail fans get off on this place because a line was built to North Creek. N.L. slowed production in the mid 80's and ceased entirely in '89. Sorry to ramble; I love the place.

| | | I forgot to let you know that I could get you driving directions; It's pretty easy from Montreal. But you need to come on the weekends. The place is active(in a sense) during the week. Look me or Samurai up, I'd love to show you the place.
