I know it goes against the ethics of UE'ing, but you have to have been tempted to pry that secret panel. I know it'd be very tempting me not to find a way to peek inside.

It was already open! Nothing inside, but it still gave me the chills to think someone or something might have been trapped in there.

In the Winter I was UEing an abandoned warehouse in my hometown with Robbieknobbie.. we were about to leave when we saw flashlights and people at the main interest (let me add, this warehouse has a lot of bums- not a good thing to screw around with). He and I ran around the basement of the complex for about 15 minutes trying to find an alternative and nonconfrontational way out when we stumbled across a partially burned, headless doll.. pretty creepy

I have this constant paranoia of running into a dead body/body parts whenever I UE.. is that weird?

I don't think so. At least, I have exactly the same fear. I blame CSI.

Two guys tried to get me into their car while I was scouting a church a few weeks ago. They claimed to be cops but refused to show me ID. I was scared senseless.

They asked me for my drivers licence after I asked them for ID. I told them it was in my car. I got in my car, shut and locked the door, and drove off. Thankfully, they weren't that close to me and weren't that bright.

Thank you. I was so scared, but I still had my wits about me. Even though it went against EVERYTHING that made sense, I was still worried when I got home that I'd made a mistake, that they were real cops and were going to show up at my door.

You did the right thing though. The situation was suspicious and they couldn't produce ID. What are they going to do to you for trying to protect yourself?

I'm certain they weren't real cops, just another sort of predator. Had they been real cops, they would have put up some sort of chase, rather than standing there watching with thumbs up their butts, so to speak.

We were exploring an abandonned incinerator a few months ago. The place still has power and telephone lines.

http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=20879

One of the main attraction of this place is the 90 feet junk drop and its huge echo. We once dropped a garbage can 10 feet in the air and the amplified sound was apocalyptical.

So we got to the control room where they used to operate cranes and there are two chairs with a handful of levers, just like in a spaceship. One of my friend decides to sit down and starts messing around. Suddenly, we all hear the loudest f*cking noise in the whole world. Remember how the place had a super-echo thingy going on? The idiot triggered a siren and the resonance of the garbage drop amplified it ten times. Five seconds later, the noise stopped and we all looked at our friend. He had just pulled back the red lever.

The whole neighborhood must have heard the siren so we ran out as fast as we could without saying a single word. As we got back in the car, we all looked at each other and started laughing hysterically.

I believe that fear is the byproduct of instinct. And I believe that God or nature or whatever gave you instincts for a good reason. I personally believe that even if you suddenly feel an "irrational" fear, like you shouldn't be where you are, you should follow your instincts and leave.

A week ago I was in an abandoned housing development (30+ empty houses in questionable shape -- very creepy) and I walked out back of one of the houses. Suddenly I felt eyes on me. It is an inexplicable feeling, but one that I didn't try to dismiss. It really felt as though someone was staring at me and ready for action. I realized that I had no weapon, no cell phone, nobody with me, I hadn't told anyone where I was, and I was a few minute walk from my car -- needless to say
I left in a hurry. Later on I asked one of my acquaintances (a local cop) about the area and he said that it is loosely populated by homeless junkies because it is rarely patrolled.

I plan on going back -- but with pepper spray, and a friend, and a maglite (or at least the heavy tripod for my camera.

Not -all- steam leaks are nessicarily bad. It seems that one wasn't so serious because if it was, youre friend wouldnt be here to tell the tale. Or he at least wouldnt have stuck around to take a picture.

There is a basement in a building downtown. The basement used to be populated with small offices, and currently has a gym. While walking down the stairs to the basement floor, there's a heavy white old-fashioned elevator carriage to the right, which obviously hasn't seen use in decades. Adjacent to that is an iron grate that had been, at the time, bolted into the jamb and padlocked.

A fellow of mine and a lady had been with me this day. Attempting to open the gate, the bolt fell easily out of the wall (it had not been used, either, for a long time), allowing the gate to be opened with a loud groaning squeal. The lighting in the basement is a dim yellow, and so, when stepping inside, all that's visible is darkness. Lighting the only match I had, we walked into the room -- the first of a series. This was just a plain room; white drywall, and a low ceiling (about 6 feet high). The wall farthest from the gate was brick, like the majority of the building's interior. There was a doorway in that wall. Well, more of a gap. So we continued on to that room. In the immense darkness, it had taken about 5 minutes for eyesight to adjust, and when it did, I could see clearly. The only object inside was a white board with a black pentacle spraypainted on it, which caught my attention the moment I adjusted. This was quite chilling. To the left of it, in the wall, were a dozen holes that had, I presume, been kicked in it. The other walls in this room were built with stones and mortar, in a very old-fashioned way. There was one more room after this, and it was incredibly dark and unlighted. The match had gone out long ago and so I was unable to see. Feeling around, my fingers grazed what I knew to be try paint, and much dust. The sound of broken glass crushing beneath our feet could be heart. My accomplices were just behind me. Then I felt something moving. It wasn't alive; I knew it was made of wood as soon as I felt it, and so I was not startled. When I touched it, it swung. It was a door. I pushed it lightly, and it creaked. I heard it shut closed. My female accomplice then approached to touch it. It had no handle, and was only a very basic swinging door. Before entering, we decided to see the rest of the room. Finding it was very empty, except for a column in the middle which also felt of dry paint, we made our way back to the corner where the door was. Stopping us, our female accomplice asked us if we heard a noise, to which we both replied, "no". Just as we shrugged it off and reached for the door, it flew open with a startlingly loud crash, and my male friend was off in about three seconds. With our fists raised, my female accomplice and I stood in front of the open door, waiting for someone to emerge. The door closed again, and would not re-open. We left after about 3 minutes.

The next day, we stopped by the nearby surplus store to pick up a flashlight and a padlock. Climbing back down the stairs, opening the iron gate once again, we walked to the final room. Shining the flashlight around, there were demonic paintings on the walls, and on the middle column there was painted the profile of a pale woman, with blood dripping from her eyes and mouth. Where the door was, it was no more. Now there was only a wall there, like the other walls in the room, but with nothing painted on it. Taking our time in figuring out the logic behind what had happened, we found that there were some old Christmas lights lying around, and that there were light switches, but the lights had been torn from their sockets (wires, drywall and insulation hung from the holes in the ceiling). Leaving at last, we padlocked the door handle.

I still return back there, but now the first room is used as a garbage storage and you literally have to climb over garbage bags to get past. Alas, it's very peaceful and inspiring down there, and a nice place to take a girl...
However, a lot of vandals have left their marks down there now and it's less interesting, but the original paintings are all still there, untouched. The lock has also been torn out of the wall.

I'll work on posting images.

True. This one wasn't bad, because the tunnel is very well ventilated at that particular spot. However, if more of that gasket were to go out, it might be a different story (IIRC, that's a 90 psi line).

I've never been down a steam tunnel before... What exactly is the danger? All the steam consuming the area leaving a lack of oxygen? The steam itself burning you? Hazardous gases in the steam? Just curious...

Most people who die in steam pipe explosions die from inhaling hot steam (it burns your lungs, not much fun). Even the survivors usually are covered in 2nd and 3rd degree burns from steam that has condensed into incredibly hot water.

A must-read for tunnel rats:

duck219 and I were traversing a new section of steam tunnel on our university campus when we finally entered the building we were seeking. It was such a long and arduous craw that we were very determined to find a different way out.

After exploring all of the catwalks and other interesting things in the lower parts of the building (it is staffed on the upper floors 24/7), we found a doorway to the stairwell. duck219 went out first and started to run around a corned when my eyes noticed something moving in the darkness... I froze in horror, and then I recognized the figure as being a friend of mine. I knew Frank because I volunteer at a local homeless shelter where he used to stay.

Once we both got over the initial fright I called duck219 to come back down and Frank told us about how long he had been staying there and we were the first people he ever saw walk out that door.

We departed with a "My secret is safe with you?" and a "Our secret is safe with you?". He also let us know the fastest and least conspicuous way out!
