| | | Posted by Akron I've always been a big fan of Painic's site, and it was one of the first collections of data that proved to me that I wasn't the only person who was interested in drains. You certainly do have massive drains in Australia, and they have been an inspiration to me since before I even entered high school. Cheers Panic!
EDIT: Why didn't I post this to begin with? Here is the largest and probably one of the strangest drains I've ever found. http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=21139

Hey Akron, thanks for the complament. Much appreciated. I've see that drain of yours, and the saussage thing is majorly unique. Plus your photos of it, particuarly the iced up one, are brilliant. That's a nice drain indeed. It's in Colorado right? Where abouts is Englewood?
Nice drains Jules. I've seen both of these web site before. One day I would not mind seeing he actual drains themselves. What about that Birmingham drain you did with Silogen?

The majority of the conduit, consists of two nearly rectangular sections, each with a maximum height of eight feet and a width that varies from 16 to 19 feet. The conduit extends under downtown Indianapolis for a distance of approximately 2.2 miles. The last 310-foot portion of the conduit consists of three 9-foot high by 12-foot wide culverts.

Another nice drain, in a rather nice state too. Is it partially water filled at one end? Oh, and I agree with Kaos, by all means, what are the most interesting drains you have been in?

| | | the biggest drain that I have ever seen (in pictures) was from a 1989-1990 issue of Thrasher Magazine. It was called Pipa Grande and it was somewhere in California. This drain was abandoned and HUGE and being used as a skate nirvana. I wish I could find those pictures. i tossed out all my Thrashers in 1997 or so. :o( Samurai

| | | I think you're confusing a drain for a spillway. I won't tell you where it is but here's a clue. After 9/11 if they catch you there you'll be shot on sight.

Thanks! I ‘guess my shots are decent, I only take pictures of what’s there. We call the dam the "Behemoth's Tyre", hence the drain's name. It certainly is unique - I never had even imagined a feature like that even existed. *looks toward Samurai* Inconceivable! Yes it’s in Colorado, where I do most exploration, and Englewood is a city-suburb of Denver. http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=20221 Iced up, eh? Take a look at the winter gallery for TIL. Another very interesting drain in Colorado is Phantom Creek: http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=20326 Check out this vault of a drain.
We actually have a whole thread about the GreatIronDoor in the Drainers forum, but I thought I'd mention it here as well. Oh yeah, that door is about nine feet tall.

We have a plan, but It'll have to wait until I move back from Baltimore. I am really curious as to what lies behind it though! Anybody else have oddities like this in their cities great drains?

| | | Yeah, that does look sizable, and nice photo - looks kinda like a tiny model in a garbage bag... Got any more photos from the construction, or of an exploration of it?

| | | Unfortunately I do not have any more photos from that particular drain... it's from a roadtrip I took last weekend, it's in another city and I don't really have the means to visit it. And I didn't get to explore it because the only way in was through the water at the base there, and I didn't have my boots with me for the trip I know it looks huge in the photo, using the guy sitting on top for scale, but the pipe itself that feeds this outfall is not so big... just a 2100, according to the local explorers who explored it later that evening.

| | | The drain in the photo by Feztaa is actually a 2400 RCP, no idea why they made the outfall so friggin' huge but it makes for a good picture. There are some more photos but they're forthcoming, the drain isn't even finished yet, there's still a whole section yet to be built and lots of concrete to pour.

The big one. To pick a nit, however, it's not pressurized.
