what could be interesting? theres two water tanks side by side near my house. they are cylindrical all the way to the ground. i wouldnt climb to the top because theres cell phone tx/rx antennas up there. would there be some cool control room or something? or perhaps some secret cool manhole that would allow me to go under them?

i dont know if this link will work but heres a picture:

I have had a look at a few water towers like these here in Canada, from my experience there is not much on or around them. Normally only a pipes buried in the ground with no access.

If you can climb to the top safely you would be able to get a good view of the town. Pick the tower with the least amount of antennae on it.

good luck.

The chances of finding anything of interest are pretty much nil. On top of that, you don't want to be caught dinking around near things associated with drinking water supply in the united states these days. I highly suggest you look elsewhere.

Might this be due to all of the available oxygen being used up oxidizing (rusting) unpainted steel used in the water tower? I think I've heard of that happening in certain types of spaces, but I don't know that it was water towers.

Yup. That and theres only one way for air to get in so not only is there the rust but you'ld eventualy choke yourself in your own carbon.

There are vents, due to the fact that it's partly a gravity fed system.

I have been in.... 3 water towers. One was pre 911 two were post. I must say they have a wonderful view.

The first was unlocked that night and we just had to go up. It was a interesting climb, with a few pedistals. There was a little hatch to look out of and we got to se the cops do a drive around at the bottom.

The second one had this huge fucking climb up it. All they had for the ladder was a safety cable. I wouldnt suggest it unless you were a good climber. Also there is a huge door up top, with no way to get to it that we could see. It was a awsome view with a walkway all around.

As for water towers not being fun to explore I presnt this one.

True, caveman, but still, point is, theres not always alot of air inside and if there isn't then thing could go wrong very quickly...

The veiw is what its all about, I dont see much excitment in being inside =P

I can say I personally have antennas on a water tower.

The view is good an worth the climb and the water tower I am using has a util vault under it with no lock.

However if anyone ever fucked with my antennas I would kick thier ass.

Not handy this was before I started taking pictures. I could possibly get some or at least diagram out the interior.

Hell, climbing the exposed ladder on old-school metal-frame water towers is 90% of the fun.

hooooooly shit!! Now that's a breathtaking view. I've never climbed a ladder taller than about 50 feet without a cage or rock shaft wall behind me.

Yeah, that was when I really solidified the fact that I'm not scared of heights. Roofing skyscrapers in Detroit never really bugged me, cause the climb is on staircases, inside the building. That exposed ladder was seriously rockin. I started to get the "If I fall, I die!" fear about half way up, but I really wanted to get up there, so I climbed it. 138 rungs at 10" spacing, 8' to the first rung. Roughly 125 feet tall.

(I kept myself calm on the way down by counting off the rungs.)
