Manhole fire burns overnight in Baltimore
BALTIMORE, Maryland (AP) -- An underground fire knocked out traffic lights and sent smoke and flames shooting from a manhole near City Hall early Monday, officials said. No injuries were reported.
The blaze just before 1 a.m. damaged an electric cable that powers nearby traffic lights, and knocked out electricity at City Hall, the courthouse and other downtown buildings, officials said.
The fire was contained, but some downtown traffic lights were still out during the morning rush hour, officials said. Several downtown streets were closed.
Drivers at intersections with no working traffic lights stopped to check for oncoming traffic before moving forward. At other intersections, police officers directed traffic.
"It's moving smoothly -- drivers have gotten into a rhythm," said David Brown, a city transportation department spokesman.
Jurors were told to take the day off after the courthouse was shut down for the day, said Rita Beyer, a spokeswoman with the court information office.
Crews worked to make the underground area safe so workers could go in to evaluate the damage and determine the cause of the fire.
Nonessential city employees who work in the buildings within the area were told to stay home.

| | | | A few years ago a train tunnel caught on fire and burned for a day or two. That was crazy, they actually used the warning sirens for the city and evacuated people left and right.

| | | | I was living near JHU when the tunnel fire started so I was about 1 mile away from the Mt Royal entrance. I remember being inside the house and hearing the sirens which was very unnerving, then going outside and being engulfed with thick black smoke. You werent able to see more than a block in any direction. There was also an incident last year that a natural gas pipe cracked and people downtown saw explosions with the manholes shooting 50 feet up in the air. It has to do with their aging sewer system which is not upkept as it should be.
"If you're not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin," Katherine Harris said.

| | | | Near me, on the WV Turnpike there is a tunnel that was bypassed by a huge cut in the mountain. Now they use the tunnel to teach Emergency crews from all over the U.S. how to fight tunnel/underground fires using real simulations.
