I understand now how dangerous UE can be now. Drains are a serious force to be reckoned with. Please everyone, read this and learn from my mistakes.

I can't believe I'm alive.

Real fucking smart man. Glad you and your buddies are okay though! When I go draining, if there is ANY chance of rain I won't even think about it. Talk to Snarf or Snipz0r about the flood over at TIL.

I can understand you wanting to quit. I know people who have been in worse situations... I guess when you've been doing it for years, it's much harder to quit.

I'm not quitting UE completely. I'm just not touching drains for a very very long time, if ever again.

And yes, after registering my new site everyone jokes about it. No biggie. At least I know what it stands for.

Some of us here in the Twin Cities had a similar experience a couple of weeks ago, and some others from the area a couple of weeks before that.

We all ended up pretty much unharmed, although it easily could have turned out just as bad as yours could have. Scary stuff. Glad to hear you all made it out in good enough condition.

I saw stuff like that on TV when I was little, and now I can't even get near a storm drain. You guys are nuts and a half...

"After circling back up and parking about ¾ of a mile away we began to walk to the same entry point. We were excited. Another chance to check out a drain that we know no one has ever been in. There was a lot of awesome lightning in the air, and I wanted to get some shots of it but it started to rain lightly and I didn’t want to get the camera wet. So we jogged to the drain entrance and got in to avoid the light rain. "

Um...yeah. No drains when it rains, or whatever. Even I know that one, and I explore asylums. I think the point here is think about what you're doing BEFORE you explore. We've all done stupid things, though. (recalls running into a squatter alone) Honestly, BE CAREFUL. Stories like that one freak me out.

That would definitely scare the crap out of me. I've alway wanted to find some drains, but my home is in the Adirondacks. Sure it's tourist heaven in the summer, but wintertime is hell.
I don't want to be critical, but even I would guess that "storm drain" equals "water goes through it, and that "rain was starting to fall" is probably a recipe for disaster.
Hopefully some young minds around here took this post for what it is; a good idea of what not to do.
Who knows, you may have saved some lives here.

Holy shit, glad you got out all right. You're lucky you didn't head into the drain earlier as you would have been deeper in. It could've been a lot worse.

It could have been way worse.

I developed the film out of the camera today. The film was damaged from the water and has a lot of spots all over it, but this picture scares the shit out of me now.

That's the 12 foot drop. Here's what the ladder looked like. (I just had to photoshop whoevers truck that was...)

Jed and I limped to a section on one of the bridges overlooking the drain and looked at it with binoculars before the sun went down. It was eerie to look at again. Even though the ladder was there when we were washed out it's long gone now. When we can walk well in a week or so we're going down there to get a closer look again. I guess I just want to see up close what almost took my life.

I think beginners in drainers should try to work from the outlet up. That way the worst most people will see is getting shot out into a river.

wow. That's a mighty small drain. Glad to hear that everyone is okay, and this is probably a good place for a bit of a PSA for the benefit of those reading this.

Draining is dangerous. By definition, drains move water from somewhere with lots of impervious surfaces to a body of water or something with lots of pervious surfaces. They can have but a trickle when it's sunny outside, yet move insane amounts of rushing water when it rains. Drains fill up quickly and with no useful warning. I know this from firsthand experience. If the weather is anything but clear for at least several hours beyond when you will be safely above ground, stay out of drains.

If you are in a drain, signs that you might be about to meet a wall of water include a change in atmospheric conditions (more/less fog, humidity, smell), changing water levels, changes to the clearness or murkiness of the water, the unexplained and relatively sudden appearance of a debris (notably cigarette butts, leaves, pop bottles, styrofoam peanuts, and other small bouyant things). The rise of water could conceivably also come with no warning whatsoever. Drains seem to fill quickly. In three minutes, a drain can go from an inch of trickling water to knee-high gushing torrents. There is absolutely no guarantee that the water will stop at this height. Most drains have grass and styrofoam bits stuck to the walls well above head level and often right up to the ceiling. This indicates how hight the water got during the last storm, and is a good sign of what you should be expecting if it begins to rain while you are in the drain.

If you encounter these conditions, immediately begin moving towards the safest known exit as quickly as possible. Something as piddly as thirty seconds could save your life. If the conditions are so bad that you cannot maintain footing or you can see that this will soon be the case, it is time to find high ground. The best thing you can do is climb the rungs or ladder up a manhole shaft and wait beneath the manhole cover for the water to subside. opening the lid to escape is an easy way to get killed in a quick and violent manner, as most manhole covers come out in roads. Stop and think about what a car traveling at even 20 mph would do to your skull before popping a manhole from beneath.

Like a fiend with his dope / a drunkard his wine / a man will have lust for the lure of the mine

That 12 foot shaft leads to the outlet. And we did get shot into the river...after getting beat up hardcore by two nasty drops.

I think beginning drainers should never attempt drains where you have to climb more than a foot.
