Air blowers

I was wondering why is it that the people that work in manholes always have those yellow blowers next to them, (a fresh source of air). Yet people that go draining seem to do fine without them. I suppose it might have something to do with the liabilty for the poeple that go in the manholes. But im not sure.

Your probably right. Liability, constant exsposure etc. I personally would dig having a few of those in my closet if I were a drainer.

Oftentimes manholes will not lead to big open tunnel systems from which air can flow easily through, but they will lead to Vault rooms, where stagnant air, gasses which displace air, etc., can build up, and present a hazard. Plus OSHA would have a fit. If it's your job, and you are provided with safety gear, and you can waste time while it's airing out anyways, why not?

Also, drainers usually stick to storm drains which don't have nearly as much toxic shit [no pun intended] and bad air in them as sanitary sewers.

... as sanitary sewers.

Which will most certainly not have any Vault rooms.

Darkism's barking up the wrong tree in this case. Macsbug and Mark have the right idea, however. When you see a manhole with a blower next to it, chances are it leads to a small room, not a tunnel of any sort. these rooms, referred to as vaults, are known for building up unpleasant mixtures of gasses. CO from car exhaust is heavier than air and will fall through the holes in a manhole cover, accumulating in the vault. The blowers are used to replace this foul atmosphere with [relatively] fresh air for the safety of the workers and also to reduce the risk of other problems, such as an electrical worker inadvertantly igniting a layer of accumulated explosive gasses.

The majority of [large] drains and sewers have their own air currents, making a blower ineffective. The workers are at the mercy of whatever the current drags along. In drains, it;s usually somewhat fresh air that has been sucked in through grates and gutterboxes. In sewers, it's usually unpleasant foul air with a spooky mixture of gasses. Sewer workers take many more precautions that other underground workers, such as being attached to a rope with a body harness when possible so that a collapsed worker can be winched out by attentive safety workers monitoring operations from the safety of the topside world.

Air blowers are part of OHSA's "Confined Space Entry" requirements.

I am certified for confined space entry. Took a simple one day course and now I have a little certificate I carry in my wallet. I did some engineering stuff at a few gas plants and they require it.

I have yet to use it during UE as a credibility prop tho.

They died within 10 sec. when they reached the the bottom of the pit. There was low oxygen in the air and lots of H2S, in low concentration H2S can be ok, but in a septic tank from a huge camping site...

When I saw the title of this thread... I was picturing a leaf blower that people use to clean their drive ways with...

I once or twice saw sewer workers in a man hole with a truck parked up next to it and they had a huge spool of plastic piping on the truck sort of like dryer piping leading down the man hole. Maybe this was an "air blower" also.

The confined space course cost me $100, well er my employer paid $100.

Anyone who works in the oilfield out here has to have it and also the H2S cert. I did not get the H2S cert as I quit the week before my course and ended up working not in the oil patch.

You can also take confined space rescue courses which cost more but they would make a kickass credibility prop. I think most sewer workers have that cert too.
