Radon Mitigation
< on 8/20/2004 1:00 AM >

Hey, this is a really big problem in Colorado. Radon comes up from the ground and builds up in the basement. It can kill you in seconds and is very radioactive. My house actually has a Radon pump to mitigate it, so I was wondering, anyone heard or experienced a first hand account of this stuff? Its a pretty bad issue. Just wondering.

Ummm... you sure about that? I know that prolonged exposure to radon can cause lung cancer, but I haven't heard anything about it causing instadeath. I've heard of radon being a threat in caves, so it would presumably be a problem in tunnels or drains too.

Basically, yes.

Radon can kill you! ... well if you live in an ill-ventilated, new house for all your life, then maybe you'll live a few weeks shorter.

It can cause cancer indeed. But somewhere in the same ratio as pilots can have cancer from being exposed to more space radiation.

- Radon mainly comes out of new building materials, and is virtually unexistant in buildings older than 20 years. But indeed, radon will also come out of natural caves.

- Radon is very radioactive and it can kill you in seconds - but even the total amount of radon found in your house, collected, filtered, compressed and applied to you all at once will not kill you - about one thousanth of that amount, applied over 20 years ... will not kill you. To gain access to amounts of radon that can kill you will assure you know well enough what you're doing *not* to get you killed.

- Radon *does* pose a health risk as it degrades your general health risk, but the cure is as simple as a little ventilation.

This is what I remember from science class. I haven't watched the tape.

I wouldn't worry about radon gas if I were you. By the way, a respirator won't help.

You're an idiot.

Especially for the radon pump part. A small basement window will do the same - at far lower initial, and nonexistent operating costs.

Wow, thats really mature. So is alot of other things but you dont hear it from me.

Anyway, yeah. Its actually a building code regulation in the suburb I live in to have a radon Mitigation system. Its a building code thing but I'm not sure about commercial buildings. So we really didn't have much of a choice to build it or not, thats why I was curious.

I'm not familiar with Radon coming from new building materials, but I do know for a fact that radon gas seeps into basements. The house I live in is built on top of a hill. Radon rises in the ground and sort of flows underneath the outermost skin of the ground, collecting in high points. All the cracks in the floor of my unfinished basement are caulked shut and the floor sump is sealed with vinyl tape. Is it overkill? maybe. Do I have to worry about radon venting into my basement? nope.

I can imagine radon could be a factor underground, but I don't imagine it is anything to worry about unless the conditions are really extreme. There are far more vital things to be concerned with anyways, like oxygen and carbon monoxide...
