The only time that I can remember using a mask while exploring was at a mine. Said mine was gated, and behind the gate was a camera. Out in the country and far from any power source, I doubted that it was real, but as always, preferred to take precautions. Wearing a ski mask, I ventured up to the mine entrance with 3 other unmasked explorers. They thought the mask was funny. We did eventually find a nondestructive way of getting behind the gate, at which point I followed the cable leading out of the camera and noted that it ended. The letters on the camera read "FCCD" - fake closed circuit device, indeed. But if it had been real, I would've been thankful for the mask.

I want to be different. But I want to be different just like everybody else, because if I really were different, everybody would think I was crazy and weird.

The photographer excuse is the best one for abandonments, hands down. It helped get the cops to release me on-site and it is to blame for the police not even telling me to leave the area. Mind you, I had the camera, extra memory, extra batteries, tripod, remote, binoculars... Not a light load.

If I had been wearing a mask I would definitely be in jail as we speak. (this was a recent event)

I do to look least suspicious: plain clothes, clearly visible photocamera and have a story ready that's not too far besides the truth:
"I'm looking at Architecture / Industrial Heritage and I though noone would mind as it's abandoned for long."

Though ... I have a plan for UEing today and bring my school books. Would be weird being a police officer finding someone sitting somewhere then finding him hiding his face ... in school books ^.^

Here's a thought. You've just left the building. You have a mask with you or your face is painted. Meanwhile, in another part of the building, some little asshole has just started a fire and you just happen to be the poor bugger that gets nailed. Good luck explaining the mask or paint especially when a witness tells the police that they saw someone with a painted face or a mask on running from the building.

I agree with IIVQ's method. Look least suspicious. It has worked beautifully for me and I have actually wound up with permission to freely explore a site with some interesting features pointed out to me.

Masks?

Con: You look like an idiot.
Con: You look VERY guilty.
Pro: ....not a thing.

The best approach to security cameras is to just nonchalantly walk on by. Plain and simple.

if you can spot the camera before it spots you, just look down.

i agree, masks are stupid.

Personally, I've always wanted to get a REALLY scary halloween mask of some sort, just so if a guard is approaching and you're cornered, at least you can have the satisfaction of scaring the living daylights outta someone before you get caught.

I can't get a non-confused thought out of my head, I'm glad some of you understand, even some of the time. What i was saying is, if everyone wore a mask all the time, it would be accepted as a normal behavior, ya dig? good.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

I went running by a cop the other day going into the supermarket wearing a dusty black suitcoat a few sizes too small for me and one of those half face masquarade masks (black one that covers your eyes and part of your nose) and I jumped on my freinds back. The cop just stared at me so I smiled and waved at him. The cop just continued to stare at me...

Just thought I'ld throw out that story... It was while phish was in town, so he must have just assumed i was a drugged up hippie freak =D

I have only worn a mask once while exploring it was one that was all white. We had brought a black light into the site with us and got somme creepy glowing mask shots. The Black light is also handy for seeing any "Protein" that may be staining furniture at a site.

i believe the original question concerned pros/cons of halloween masks...to that end i would say no. yes, vision is obstructed, yes, breathing is reduced...but when was the last time you had one on? remember how they smelled? i wouldn't want that attached to my face for any length of time while sitting, let alone while moving.

i digress, there was a report of a robbery in england in the early 1900's...where the robber wore bright red gloves, and afterwards, the only thing the victims could remember were those gloves. not his completely exposed face. in contrast...(while i do not advocate this) you could get away with something similar. would you want to know the single most effective way of being undetected???

its called caution, intelligence, and mobility. avoid the camera, shadow your face, and be the blur.

mask is bad...for walk arounds and do-nothings.
mask is good...for driveby's, and cat burglary.

have a nice one.

I didn't make the world you live in, I make the world you live in...SCARIER.

Don't wear a mask when you are somewhere you don't belong. It will attract attention of cops. They will slap you with a tresspassing charge because they can't get you with anything else.

If you ever get caught just tell the cops the truth and the will probably (95%) just give you a warning. They wouldn't consider this real crime. First they have to do paperwork and seconds they realize that you aren't a criminal type.

What about liquid latex, it's on there and can be used to hide your face, but can be pealed off in a few seconds I know I am not going to be wearing a jason style hockey mask for any infs any time soon, but latex may be something think about if going some place with tight security.
