i found some promising looking storm drain manholes downtown, and wanted to know how often manholes lead to something good, meaning big enough to explore. remember, this is manholes in an urban setting. thanks.

In an urban area, there's a pretty good chance, especially if it's an older part.

Yet another unoriginal generic UE website. GODDAM!

Around here, many lead to telecoms vaults. Very few lead to anything exporable. But you can usually tell from reading the manhole...

In any case, this is extremely area-dependant.

Like everyone is saying, this depends heavily on where you are. If you're dealing with a college campus with a known tunnel system, about one manhole in every twenty or thirty might go to something "good", to give you a rough idea. If you're in the middle of a suburban neighborhood, the probability of finding something "good" is essentially zero.

i'd suggest getting your hands on some info through public records, otherwise you could be in for a waste of time.

Why not just follow the manholes downhill - the drain has to empty out somewhere, right?

Because the path often leads into backyards and private property where K9s often reside. Your better off getting a map or just talking to people.

Tell me about it. I wandered my city for endless hours opening up all manholes sanitary and storm (manholes are not labeled) with a friend.

It was long work but I have to admit it was fun. I don't care if a pipe is explorable or not. I don't care if its dirty or clean. I just like watching the water, smelling the warm air. I think by opening up all those manholes my perception of draining and sanitary sewers was changed tremendously.

You never know what you will find. On one quiet street we opened up a santiary manhole in a front yard and found MOUNDS of chalk inside it, as though some kid had just lay there all day, dropping chalk down the little ventilation hole. I should go back on check up on that and see what it looks like today.

I know in Calgary, about 99% of the manholes out there lead to something too small to traverse. The best way I've found to find storm drains is to just walk along the river/lake/resevoir/body of water - drain will usually be their largest at the outfall (with the exception of stormwater detention tunnels, or high slope at the outfall, or just plain bad design).

Even better way I've found is to go to city hall and look at the maps. Yes, it's cheating - but it works so well : )
