abandoned hotel NW Indiana < on 2/7/2014 3:49 AM >
An abandoned 14-story eye sore stands directly across the street from the city hall and court building in a NW Indiana city known for its steel production. You will probably have an extremely hard time guessing which city this abandoned hotel is located in. It's Ok...if you look at some of the photos there are some subtle clues.
Four different mayors have tried desperately to rehabilitate the building and/or have it torn down. The current mayor of the city tried to get the hotel imploded for free and have its implosion be used in a Hollywood movie. They gutted the place for asbestos and removed almost all of it (which is why there are only bare walls where the rooms were).
I threw in some photos of the train station for the hell of it. 1.

I've done a lot of exploring in Gary. I live about forty minutes away. I've been there 20 times. I got my car broken into once. It was my fault for parking it in the middle of nowhere instead of where other cars were parked.

I've never actually been to the hotel, driven by it enough times though. I heard it wasn't really worth it due to how torn up it is. It's nice to see some interior shots though. I like the shot of the overgrown swimming pool.

Oooh I would like so much to get out to Gary. We were thinking of breezing through at least for a quick look on our way back from the xmas trip to Detroit but we ran out of time and light. Summer, hopefully! I love the photos. And yeah, that shot of the grassy swimming pool is just great. But many of the other large spaces in the hotel... very well captured, you really managed to frame a lot of what the place used to be, to me. The scale of things. input: bacon | output: fiction
