If you just wait long enough, there will be only one cannibal rat left on board, and then if you wait just a bit longer, there will be none. The quality control of journalism and the news these days is pretty low. Internet "news" is even more questionable.
The ship and the rest of the story is pretty cool. Anyone got an ocean going powerboat they feel like lending a crack team of UER sailors?
I've been on an abandoned ship very similar in size and shape to this one although a bit older, in its final incarnation as the Faithful:

It got dumped various places in the Bay Area, and finally towed out to to the Sacramento river delta where it's still floating around. Not as cool as being dumped in international waters. The City of Oakland actually paid a salvage company $100,000 to remove the ship from the city waters.

| | | | I remember reading a great short story once about three keepers on a remote lighthouse that watched in horror as an abandoned ship full of rats drifted closer and closer to their island. Knowing full well the rats were starved and it would only be a matter of time before they found their way to the lighthouse!
