First Trip of 2014

I'm finally getting around to making a legit thread for these photos after editing and holding onto them for a few weeks.

I went down to Philadelphia to visit my friend for New Years for a few days and then made my way back to New York and the Hudson Valley to visit my other friend I hadn't seen in years. In the process I got to check out some new places I had been dying to see for years. No one understood how it took me all day to drive from Philly to New York, but they just don't get it...

Philadelphia, PA - 1.2.2014
Since I had never been to Philly and my friend lives in the 'burbs, Radical Ed gave me a hint or two on some neighborhoods to check out. After driving around I decided to check out this decent sized warehouse. My friend I was with never explores and was sheepish since there was no obvious entrance. I warmed him up with some railroad track walking. For once, it was nice not going it alone...

Thiells, NY - 1.3.2014
I headed out of Philly after that snowy cold mess storm thing and back to my second home of the Hudson Valley in NY. I finally made an effort to stop by Letchworth Village. My interior shots came out awful and the place was a mess. Still loved the architecture though. But only really liked this one photo of the place. I don’t do much in terms of exteriors, but I tried on this one and I think it’s decent.

Westchester County - 1.3.2014
I had first heard about this abandoned suburban development in 2009, and by piecing together what little information I had about it, I was able to find out its location by 2011, but never had a chance to go until 2014. Figures. Best place ever though. Just me in the woods in this playground of abandonment. Aside from getting stuck in some prickle bushes I was running around like a little kid in the single digit temperatures.

Woodstock, NY - 1.4.2014
I had heard of this place in 2009 as well, but procrastinator me waited until 2014 to check it out. It was a former hotel in the Catskills, shuttered in the 1940s and later burned leaving only a shell. Took a mile or mile n a half hike straight up the side of a mountain after all the snow that pounded the region that week, but it was totally worth it. I really got my workout in.

Any comments or constructive criticism on the photography is welcomed. I still have a lot to learn since I picked up my first DSLR last April. If any of you have been to these places I'd love to hear your story as well.

that sounds like a heavenly trip! and you sound like my kind of explorer! I often go alone too and also often feel like a kid in a candy shop, running around in the suburban development sounds like it was amazing!!
thanks for sharing your shots, I like many of them a lot, esp the ones with the snow, adds a nice touch!

Good stuff man, I can definitely see you improving already. 1, 8 and 9 are all excellent, especially with the snow on the pages there. The exposure on 9 is spot-on.

Was the room in #11 darker than it looks in your photo? I notice your focus is a little off on that one. Stuck doing manual in the dark?

Yea that house was pretty dark. Even though I took the same photo at diff exposures I couldn't get the focus just right. Super pain! But I got it back together for the next room over at least which was 9.

I'm diggin #4 a lot.

Thanks! That was one I liked right after I took it.

Yea I usually always go alone. I've only gone with other people 2 or 3 times. Floodspectre can attest to one of those times, and then I drag my friends out on occasion like in Philly. Nothing compares to experiencing a place by yourself and having the freedom to do whatever you want at any time. Despite associated risks.

Some gorgeous shots in here. I really like all the images of abandonments with snow on the insides. It just makes them seem that much more exposed, I guess.
