These are all photos I took in an abandoned industrial complex on a crappy iphone camera. I had been meaning to contribute to this community more, so here we go. I hope you all enjoy

Gotta love Nicetown. (That's really the name of the neighborhood!)

"Will you compromise and then realize the price is too much to pay?" "Winners and losers... which one will you be today?"

Nice man! We Stumbled upon this place when we were at the nearby breakfast pastry factory down the street. Did you visit that as well?

My mom used to work there at Tastycake, bro! Sometimes after school when she was working late I had to take the "R" bus down and meet her there.

Nice place. Liked most rooftop photos. The indoors ones were somewhat blurry (maybe the light?).

(Btw it helps numbering the photos too imo. Easier reference ^^)

Thanks for the share.

Everything in the bakery was made with live cultures and yeast. It had been baking 24 hours a day, 6 days a week for 88 years until it closed in 2010 and moved to the Navy Yard. The average temperature for the baking ovens was 600 degrees F.
This is the fourth winter for the factory with the interior temperature being under 70 degrees F. The severity in decay with the extreme temperature changes, the age of the building materials and the contents left behind are creating that horrid stench you're experiencing.
It smelled like fresh, sugary bread when it was in full production. A smell I'll never forget.
Mom brought brown paper supermarket bags home full of pies and cupcakes that were one or two days past expiration or had packaging snafus. I remember when Butterscotch Krimpets were wrapped in wax paper and when they switched over to plastic shrink-wrap, Mom said the packaging department's new smell gave her a headache. She was a supply purchaser in the offices there.
Aahh, memories...

Did the move to new facilities coincide with Tastycake's surge in popularity? I had never heard of it until this past year. Maybe I wasn't paying attention but it seems coincidental to the move.

You betcha

Oh, back to the odd smell in there. I almost forgot in addition to the yeast, don't forget about the thousands of pounds of butter and shortening and the thousands of gallons of milk, buttermilk and cream adding to the fragrance!
*
The surge in popularity? Nope. That didn't occur, my friend.
Less than a year after receiving 32 million in taxpayer money, borrowing a total of 122 million dollars, building a new factory from the ground-up and moving into a reduced-tax economic zone in the Navy Yard, Tastycake was sold to the Georgia conglomerate Flower Foods for 34 million. The move was so costly, they were facing immediate insolvency and a loss of over 750 jobs. Now Tastycake is owned by a company based in Georgia but because the new factory was built and the new company is responsible for all of the incurred debt, Tastycake will remain in Philadelphia for a long, long time.

Really cool location. Thanks for the background story Ed! Great memories. Sad that this is the way of the new world, corporate greed and graft.
