Linfield and Pennhurst or Kings Park?

Hi everyone,

Can anybody give me some tips on a visit to the Philly area? I wanted to get to Pennhurst and Linfield Industrial Park. I plan on getting a hotel room as we're from CT over 4 hours away. Can anybody tell me if it's definitely worth the time, trouble, and cost? I've heard Pennhurst isn't that good anymore, but haven't heard much of anything about Linfield. Is it worth a hotel room if we visit both? I'm looking to get some good indoor pictures with lots of "layers," but enough light as well. We've already been to ESP, so that's not an interest for us.

Linfield's fine, although extremely boring and Pennhurst is owned by a company who uses the grounds for manufacturing compost and mulch for landscaping and opens about half of the (majorly refurbished) asylum for haunted Halloween exhibits. Some of the asylum buildings might be accessible but are guarded by a local National Guard military facility who uses the buildings for training and storage. $1000-$3000 fines if caught, so exercise extreme caution and be prepared for the worst. They don't just admonish you for exploring there, they drag your ass into the jail and hold you for a while before administering the pricey citation. It's felony-trespass if you act like an asshole, and they're not generally gentle, kind or forgiving.

Ouch. I didn't know about the National Guard being there.

Can anybody suggest anywhere else in the area? Also, does Centralia offer any cool exploring/photography? It looks pretty barren and kind of boring. Maybe not worth the extra 90 minute drive?

EDIT: After doing some more research I came upon King's Park. It looks huge, possible bigger than Fairfield Hills or Mansfield Training School, places that I am very familiar with. Maybe it is smarter to just head there as it's over an hour closer than the other places. Thoughts?

Hi! Welcome to UER.CA, one of the biggest online collections of tips, tricks, and (mis)information on the planet on the loosely defined group of activities known as Urban Exploration.

That being said, it's really no surprise that you have assumed that this might be a good place to ask about directions to, or the coordinates of, abandoned and/or off-limits places in general (or your favorite place in particular).

I'm sorry to inform you that this is not, in fact, the case.

The general practice here is to avoid giving out specific details about the names and locations of the places we talk about on the Public Forums. Most of us are not trying to be rude (some probably are), but there are some good reasons behind the practice.

Property Owners, Security Personnel, and Law Enforcement Officers are known to frequent this site in order to passively and actively prevent further exploration.

Vandals, Scrappers, and Arsonists are known to frequent this site in order to find places to Vandalize, Scrap, and Arse.

Naming a location on the public forums can cause that thread to come up in the results of web searches, so that Property Owners, Security Personnel, Law Enforcement Officers, Vandals, Scrappers, and Arsonists who do NOT frequent this site will see it anyway.

Finally, some of us are petty and possessive about the places we've busted our butts to access, and have seen some really great locations descend into ruin after word about them got out. We get LOTS of people coming through who just want a cheap thrill without putting in any effort, and it gets tiring after a while.

Now, maybe you ARE a Property Owner, Security Person, Law Enforcement Officer, Vandal, Scrapper, or Arsonist. If so, welcome to the site! All information contained herein is for educational purposes only, all actions described are fictional, and all photographs have been photoshopped or stolen off of Flickr.

If you are NOT one of these, welcome to the site! We have a fantastic trust system in place, and once we get to know you, you, too, may be admitted into the halls of glory that are accessible with a Full Membership. With FM status comes access to the Private Boards and Location Database, where information flows a little more freely (There is even a guy in the bathroom that hands out towelettes!).

Find some places. Post some pictures and/or plan a meet-and-greet in your regional forum if there isn't one already. Make some constructive comments. Get to know us, and you'll find we can be pretty inviting and helpful. There is already a huge amount of info on what to do and expect here: http://www.uer.ca/...p?fid=1&catid=1089 They let me in, so it can't be that hard.

Anyway, when you get down to it, this site is about Urban Exploring, not Urban Tourism. Magellan would not have been a very great explorer if he was following a GPS to some coordinates he downloaded of the internet. So... go explore something. Show us something we haven't seen before, and you'll be on the road to fame and riches in no time.

Thanks. I'm a long time lurker and am familiar with that post. I didn't think I was being too specific, but I apologize as it appears I was.

Linfield is pretty cool i guess. Boring, but cool. All the buildings are pretty much the same on the inside, there's a few broken down random houses, and a huge water tower to climb.

As for Pennhurst: Lots of buildings with lots of amazing things to see (though to someone who has been in dozens of abandoned building, he/she may not think so). I would HIGHLY recommend not going there until there is coverage from leaves. If you go now, you are very probable that you will be seen. And trust me it likely wont go well :p I have a map of the campus breakdown for each building as per silent alarms/security, and such. If interested PM me. But really dont go until there is privacy for you. Good luck!

KPPC is a pretty cool place, although, after visiting yesterday I can say that one of the main attractions is inaccessible. The building which houses the Morgue is locked up pretty tight. Managed to finally find an opening that we kinda had to parkour into, but even after we got in we found that the morgue itself had been welded shut. I dunno if there was another way in from the other side or not, but I dropped my flashlight outside while doing the aforementioned ninja moves to get in and my cohort and I were losing daylight too fast to go wandering around in the dark with no flashlights and dead phones.

Also, they ripped down quite a few buildings at the beginning of last year, although there are still quite a few buildings spread out throughout the entire campus to check out. Though, the Rec Building with the swimming pool and bowling alley was one of those buildings demolished.

Also worth noting that within the past few weeks Building 93 was resealed. I didn't notice another way in, but maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. It was a little sketchy walking around that building in the open, and we were pressed for time so we moved on to other buildings.

No real sign of police presence, but KPPC sits in the midst of an active park system, and park maintenance drive around in their green pickups looking for people in places they don't belong, and from what I understand they will call the cops if they see you going in or out of the buildings. (Some will give you a hard time for just being around some of the buildings due to some of them being in fenced in areas.)

I would say KPPC is a much better explore than Pennhurst, because once a place gets fixed up (as said before, Pennhurst operates as a cheesy halloween attraction now) it kinda loses it's magic

Idk about that. KPPC has stepped up the zero-tolerance policy like crazy in the past few years. Patrols are much more frequent (sounds like you just had good timing). Each year, on average of 200-300 violations mixed with arrests are made. So i'd say that yes, security is most certainly an issue lol. Id love to go there but not worth the risk of getting caught. Plus the health risk is high, due to the asbestos and lead paint (unless you have a gas mask or respirator). But even then, it all sticks to your clothes, which will make contact with your cars interior...and then your homes interior.

As for Pennhurst, its still a great place & only a few building have been wired with security and/or fixed up for that stupid halloween attraction thing

Pennhurst only if you live close by/ are smart about it. As another poster said, only a select number of the buildings are wired with security for the haunt. However, things have drastically changed since the haunt came in… most of the "good" artifacts were moved into the haunt section… and the tunnels have been filled in to prevent easy access through them. Probably not worth your time.

I'd shoot for KPPC if those are your options.

Im a native new yorker (brooklyn to be exact) and have been to kings park a few times, its great imo. The kirkbride is building 93 & stands 13 stories high & as of my last visit, still "open". Theres a few other buildings that are easy to get into & great to check out. Theres a few more places in & around nyc worth checking into so let me know when you're un the neighborhood & maybe do a group explore

The security you mention isn't as tight as you make it sound from my visits. Theres the occasional NPS & PD patrols but they are close to dusk & as long as they dont see you entering or exiting they just wave & move on. Thats just my experience though
