| | | Overkill 2014: Rise of the Proletariat < on 1/15/2014 12:56 PM >
| | | I was recently visited by a member of UER who I think a number of Toronto explorers will recognise. We met up last Saturday to visit two abandoned neighbourhoods, a ton of roofs, and a subway tunnel under construction. We also stumbled through a police army to witness a Korean protest, had great food, and went to a hardcore concert (not pictured). 1. This abandoned neighbourhood I'm pretty certain I've shared on here before is nearing its final days.
2. Not sure what type of place this was. It appears to be an American Evangelical ministry.
3. Time to rock the fuck out, Seonbi style.
4. I was glad to find one small scattering of remaining traditional houses in the middle of the zone.
5.
6.
7.
8. Korean maskdance performers believe that their masks literally contain a living soul that is capable of displaying emotions.
9. Not a country known for its neatly parallel lines.
10. An overview of the area, with a bit of Seoul's traditional city wall in the distance.
11.
12. We got to see and hear some active demolition from a nearby rooftop.
13. That's a fuckton of police down on the street there.
14. As we watched, the police came out of their buses. Were they about to bust two foreign rooftoppers?
15. The police marched downhill to the site of Dongnimmun, where an anti-president rally was currently underway.
16. If you got stuck in the doors, would you know which button to press?
17. Would've been major overkill if they were after us. It was still overkill though.
18. We interrupted the protest as it turned into a parade complete with music.
19. "Electoral Fraud Park Geun-hye some suffix I don't know"
20. Next: break for food.
21. Unbreak for rooftops.
22. We call this Dong Cult Park, short for Dongdaemun Culture and History Design Park. It isn't open yet and nobody's sure what it does. This is the location of a lot of Korean UE history, having formerly housed two stadiums that were prominently demolished within my time, and also the first construction crane I climbed.
23. That small city gate down there is Gwanghuimun. You can see another segment of the traditional city wall connected to it. This section on the east side doesn't connect up with the previously seen section on the west. You can thank Imperial Japan for that.
24. Group photo.
25. I'm not good with numbers, but this bears a striking resemblance to something else.
26. Time for subway tunnels.
27.
28. And hitting the last bus home.

Not high, maybe 50 or 60. It's mainly that wide to accommodate heavy traffic. If it weren't for the time lapse you'd probably see that most of the vehicles are taxis. I was actually pretty surprised how empty the road was, as this was just shortly after rush hour but right when the market was warming up. While we were up there the stage in front of the department stores went through Psy's biggest songs, and followed it up with Crayon Pop.

| | | Nice set. I note the lift panel didn't have a 4, as to be expect in that part of the world.

Does that mean you're coming to Korea? Be careful what you wish for. I suspect she wishes she had been.

| | | Fantastic! Love the creepy/funny masked appearances. Is there no impetus to preserve the old traditional houses? They're crusty but charming; once they're gone, a part of history will be lost...

The preference for decades is highrise apartments. You can fit more people on the same piece of land if you destroy them and build upwards. There are a couple places where they're better preserved, but still at risk I'm told.
