Article: Abandoned D.C.: I Got Arrested

This dude writes about his urbex adventures right down to naming locations--I don't know if he's a member of this board but if he is and he reads this, I'm kinda glad he got busted. It's people like him that ruin things... I'm pretty sure I ran into him recently at a location and he was making tons of noise, so much so, that I first thought he was a scrapper. Anyway, a bit from the article.

It's around 12:30 on a Sunday afternoon, and I'm staring down the barrel of an M-4 assault rifle.

This is not something that's ever happened to me before; I've never fought in a war, have scarcely ever been around a firearm and learned years ago to avoid law enforcement at all costs.

Yet here I am, standing in the mold-covered lobby of a long-abandoned honeymoon resort in the Poconos, with an assault rifle — more than one, actually — pointed directly at me. It is a situation I really hadn't prepared myself for, and in the garbled mess of panic-induced, fearful thoughts running through my head, one voice makes itself louder than any other.

I don't give a shit if he's naming a location with active motion detectors and bored state police with K-9's and M-4's.

Now I know not to go.

(Like I would drive that fucking far to see an '80's motel anyway, lol).

Props to this guy for informing the general public they shouldn't even think of trying to get into this hobby/obsession!

hahahahahah @ this

"You drove four hours to photograph an abandoned building?" one of them said, incredulously. "Don't you have girlfriends?" Another officer flipped through the photos on my camera, eventually stumbling across some of my shots from Grossinger's, taken several weeks before. "This isn't your first time doing this, huh?"

Dang, I've seen several sets from this place, too. I wonder if those motion sensors are newly added?

As I understand it, the area he was in is still active...used as an office. There are other areas that are wide-open so to speak that don't have the alarms... unless the owner has added more alarms since someone I know and trust last went there.

Police can be such assholes when It comes to this type of thing... Did they really think shotguns were required? And they kept their shotguns raised even after finding out the people in question wern't of any harm to them? Just seems a bit overkill.

When I was arrested they brought 2 K9 Dogs and there were 4 cop cars - about 6-7 cops in total showed up. Seemed like a waste of taxpayers money. If they spent that kinda money on fixing up these abandonments or tearing them down we really wouldn't be having these types of issues.

He said he got arrested, but only got detained and a citation? Eh, sounds like the police wanted to use this as an opportunity to try and scare others away from the hobby. Seriously telling people not to go into a building just makes it that more tempting, silly human nature. I do have to say name dropping a place of that caliber seems rather disrespectful to a location that well preserved. I did enjoy this section though,

"Abandoned places are very, very quiet ones, and the Summit Resort was no exception. You really don't realize how noisy the average building is, even at rest, until you're in one that's been vacant for years. Things you don't typically hear — everything from your stomach grumbling to your own breath — become very loud. And so you can imagine how dismaying it is to hear something that sounds like another person's footsteps, and to hear them approaching you."

Very nicely put on his part.

Good ol' militarization of the police force. Plus a bit of terrorist hysteria. Great combination for a police force that are likely former military who were trained to think everyone is a threat except your unit. But not all of em are like this, and it depends on the city too. My run in with cops have been pleasant. Have to strongly agree with your bottom statement though, excess waste, when the buildings I walk in could be put to amazing use. So much waste, makes me sad.

I was wondering why the state police overkill but upon further research of the area I've discovered it's near a casino, the large town of Stroudsburg, the New Jersey stste border, the Delaware River, many major and minor state parks with camping facilities, a good number of active resorts/ski mountains and a few private golf courses. Major fishing and recreational lakes and wildlife refuges dot the area as well, along with quite a few scenic waterfalls. There's also at least three breweries in the area.

I imagine they have their hands full.

Apparently they were using their M-4 assault rifles, which is intensely overkill to the max for this situation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M4_carbine

I guess if they've had problems with scrappers and drug addicts then perhaps they were expecting the worst case scenario... a drugged up fiend ready to die in a hail of bullets.

He says in the comments that his publicly naming the locations has no impact. I disagree. It's not like a lot of people know about this place.

There's a member of the Ontario Forum who publically ousts location names on his blog and a couple of them have either been sealed up right or been demolished relatively close to when his blog was published or vandalism has dramatically increased. He follows the same mentality of "Naming them doesn't change anything" when although nobody has publically said "I'm here because of this person" or "I demolished this location after seeing it on this blog", it's just an odd coincidence.

I think he's 'embellishing' (aka -- lying) regarding some details.

For one thing, if someone really is pointing an M-4 at you from a short distance way, most people -- especially this guy who stated he doesn't have much familiarity with firearms -- is not going to have the presence of mind to notice whether or not the officer's finger was on the trigger (which it shouldn't have been) & that the officer was staring directly into his eyes (the officer's eyes should have been on the guy's hands).

I also think had a K-9 been brought-up close to him while he was proned-out, he would have mentioned the dog barking & whining, & maybe felt some spittle from the dog land on him.

Whenever some people go into great detail to describe a situation, it's usually easy to call BULLSHIT based on some of the details included & excluded.

If an officer is pointing an M-4 at you I think it's pretty safe to assume that his finger is on the trigger.

Cops are only supposed to have their fingers on the trigger when they intend to shoot someone, otherwise, the finger should be on the guard or whatever it's called.

I can personally say last year this resort had a watchful eye or two on it. I got some "tips" on when to go/how to enter the property and almost got caught.

There are houses in front of the only entrance to the place, the gas station and houses across the street from the property, so it is a busy area. Plus it's off of a busy road and right by interstate 80.

I tried to go through the woods and a neighbor I assumed called local police. Luckily I got to my car and passed the unmarked cop who went to the property.

Supposedly there is a real estate office on the premises, that is the "active" part of the property. Like another "Inn" in the Poconos, I don't think I'd brave going there any time soon.

I can say there is plenty other stuff to see around the area that is a
lot less risky, so I'll stick to those for now...oh and the winter needs to go before I think of possible explores, haha!

I cannot believe that they used such force on some photographers. I'm not really shocked since cops don't have anything better to do most of the time. Does anybody have some sets of this place? Im curious to see what it looks like.

I can't understand why he'd name the location of the abandonment if he's encouraging people not to go in it. It's like he's baiting people as he goes on and on about the "wondrous", "beautiful" heart shaped bar that "sent his head spinning". Then he tells people in bold letters not to go to Summit Resort.
