Summit Air-Force Base

I was following this winding back road for about 15 mi, and it was beginning to seem like it had no purpose. Eventually the road came to a dead end where there were many standing structures. The doors were snowed in and there was no sign of recent entry or exit. What interested me the most was this dome like structure that overlooked all the other buildings. There was a barbed wire fence surrounding only the biggest structure. Yet how secure is a barbed wire fence when the front gate is open.

Not completely sure what these facilities were used for... Any Ideas?

Tons of com towers everywhere. From what you have it just looks like a communications, observations, and surveillance base.

Which state/country are these from? They look like radar station. If far enough north they could be part of the "cold war" northern early detection system. Then they could just be radar or communication facility. Knowing where they are and if an airport or military facility is near by would help.... S1

Cold war surveillance station, probably doubles as communications as well
Only option is to walk up to the door and know or try to peer in through a window. Of course I only say that if it looks like no ones been there for 5+ years

Apparently that DID just happen. And I AM proud of it

Looks like an active ARSRS-4 air surveillance RADAR site operated by the FAA, possibly a former USAF air control & warning site.

Do a Google search on the name of the mountain/hill +FAA.

I came across these buildings at the peak of a mountain in north western MT. I know that there was an airforce base at the bottom of the mountain that was used in the cold war era. The only structure surrounded by a fence is the building that connects to the tower in the first picture.

I won't give the name/location, but if I'm right, this was a former USAF Air Defense Command Air Control & Warning RADAR station from 1961 - 1978 when the RADAR was turned over to the control of the FAA & technology allowed the site to be remotely operated.

The "Air Force Base" at the base of the mountain was the cantonment (housing) area of the Air Force Station, and was sold off & re-used as a training school.

The main gate shouldn't have been left open, but may have been because an FAA tech or site manager may have been inside the equipment buildings. Regardless, the buildings themselves are relatively secure & alarmed.
