Thoughts on Shipwrecks

Shipwrecks. Old, rusty, cold, and abandoned. But, are they abandonments? As an advanced wreck diver and soon to be Navy diver, I'm biased to say yes, primarily on the grounds of wrecks being forgotten by time, off limits to the public, and a capsule of humanity. The human touch remains inside. For example...

1.

The captain's sink. Chipped paint all around, dust and growth, and the mirror long since lost.

2.

Cramped ensign's bunks. The silt is another, unique hazard that gets the adrenaline pumping.

3.

A rusty, crusty breaker board. Not unlike what I've seen in factories. Notice the still legible label.

4.

Damned if I know what it says.

5.

There's no way of properly capturing the scale of the industrial wonder here. Mostly because of the fucking silt.

6.

The wildlife outside is usually more friendly than our friends the raccoon and feral dog.

But, what do you think, forum? Is penetrative wreck diving UE?

As a long time diver, I would certainly say it is. It is industrial decay, but in a different environment than most UE. I do a lot of mine exploring. Technically not UE, but there is a lot of industrial decay there too. My photos have received favorable response.

I say share the pictures! If anyone objects they can simply move on to the next thread.

I think exploring shipwrecks is a much better example of the hobby than climbing a crane on top of new construction. I don't know why there's so much emphasis on the word "urban" when a good deal of abandonment-hopping is done in rural regions.

"Are you happy now with all the choices you've made?" "Are there times in life when you know you should've stayed?"
"Will you compromise and then realize the price is too much to pay?" "Winners and losers... which one will you be today?"

I would be incredibly surprised if anyone had a serious problem with you posting shipwreck explorations. I know of a few people on here that dive frequently and I am sure there are many I don't know of.

Despite the actual definition, around here "urban" exploring tends to mean exploring man made creations. Barns in the middle of nowhere aren't technically urban but not many people have taken to saying Rural Exploration.

Point being, post up your wrecks. A lot of us around here love boats anyways (myself included).

I'm a looong time diver. Love shipwrecks.

Personally I just feel this falls into a whole other category. Not "urban exploration". Not that I don't care that it's not urban, a lot of UE comes from rural areas. I just think underwater is in a different category.

Everyone has a dark side, mines just a little more illuminated.

I'd say yeah, it is definitely exploration. The ships are no longer in use, left to decay within their environment. And you most certainly have to be an explorer to reach them. They're just another category, like houses vs. factories, etc.

I've been fascinated with shipwrecks since the whole Titanic craze. Forget the movie, I couldn't get enough pictures of the wreck!

I like your pictures - post more!

Thanks for all the insight, ladies and laddies. Unfortunately, there's a ladder of experience to ensure survival of these endeavors, and I'm still climbing. Penetration diving is a little different in the warm, clear waters of the Gulf than it is in the icy, murky Great Lakes. I, however, will have more original photos to share in March, after a quick trip down to where private guides can be...coerced...for an inside experience. In the meantime, have your fill of photos respectfully privateered from the interwebs.

Fucking bro-dudes and scrappers are even smashing stuff in wrecks now too!

(And I'll go with the chorus of "exploring" is the more important part of what we're all interested than the specifics of what/where is being explored.)

I love shipwrecks! but..um..I have a slight I guess you could call it a mild phobia of being in water past my knees...especially water I cant see in without a light

Apparently that DID just happen. And I AM proud of it

This is my response as well.
I never completed my SCUBA instruction, so at this point in my life, I don't mind living the explore vicariously!
Like most of us, I would love to see more!

Shipwreck photos are super rad. Not to mention any form of exploration like that that involves specialized equipment to get to is neat to see. Shipwrecks are definitely considered abandonment's, and I would consider it a form of UE.

I'd love to see more photos of shipwrecks!

Yes, shipwrecks are abandonments! MOAR, please!

Bonus points for use of the word "penetrative"
