| | | "I will play the dumb photography student card to the best of my ability" Has worked for me the few times I had to deal with them. If possible I will pretend I don't see them at first, and keep snapping pics looking like I know what I am doing. Then act very excited at how well my project is gonna turn out when I do talk to them. Worked every time so far *knocks wood*

| | | Posted by Flareodactyl I've been in a handful of encounters with the cops over the past year or so and I find as long as you're respectful and polite, your chances of getting out with a warning are much greater. Usually, with UE, my tactic is to reassure them that I'm simply there to take pictures. Usually they sympathize with that and we have a conversation about how there can often be vandals and arsonists looking to cause destruction to abandoned buildings. If they ask me my name, I politely give it and so far, I've only been given warnings. I think cops just really like to see people cooperate with them willingly, because they're just doing their job after all. I also feel that the fact that I'm younger really plays to my advantage because most police officers are so used to dealing with disrespectful teenagers, that a polite and respectful younger person who's just there to take pictures is the least of their worries.

Everything about this is good advice.

| | | Apart from identifying your body in case of stepping on a mine or something :p, would carrying ID be helpful in police encounters? Do you guys usually carry ID when UE?

Yes- carry ID. Usually three outcomes with police- a warning, a citation or arrest. They usually won't give a citation if you don't have ID so that limits you to getting a warning or being arrested.

It won't help if you're stopped by a female officer.
