I don't know sure some caution should be exercised but 99% of the time acting like that is likely to just piss them off and cause even more of an issue for you. Believe it or not unlike most of society thinks not every cop is out to destroy your life. The only time I would be this cautious is if I knew I wasn't doing anything illegal and they randomly pulled me over, approached me, or entered any private area I was in or attempted to.
Short of that if I'm UE, Speeding, or doing something I know I shouldn't be sure I'm going to find the best way to get me out of the situation but I'm also not going to hardball the cop. The people who hold hard to those items and the people making those comments are the ones who have a bone to chew or are nuts usually.
Per Scanners, those are great except more and more areas are encrypting / digital trunks / other methods of preventing people from listening in.

If I know I've done nothing wrong, I will be respectful yet very persistent in my reminding the officer of my constitutional rights. In the context of urban exploration, however, I will play the dumb photography student card to the best of my ability. I also am very calm with the officer- 99% of them are expecting someone that's maliciously breaking into a place, and if you catch them off guard by being the opposite, they'll let you go. Of course there are always the cops that just want to ruin everybody's day- if you get one of them, you're pretty much fucked.

Huh, well there are ways to smooth out an encounter with a cop.
A guy I used to work with said that every time he was pulled over for speeding, he would thank the cop for catching him and admit he needed the wakeup call. It almost always got him out of a ticket.
When a cop asks me how much I've had to drink, I always answer "I had one drink for supper hours ago" and let them do the calculations in their head, "Oh, so it should be out of his system now." If I'm caught doing something really bad, I blame the alcohol; usually in those situations I've had one or two, which can easily be turned into four or five by acting. That might only work in Korea.
If you give cops a little bit of help, they sometimes return the favour, as long as you're not in too deep. I find it best to not seem too on guard, and even seem a bit too helpful with information, without actually being.

I've been approached several times since I've been driving across country. I am as honest as possible with them. Don't lie (I always have my camera with me) and tell then what I do and that I'm an amateur photographer. I explain that I could loose my job if arrested and usually end up previewing my photos with the officer. States I've meet some of the local officers' Texas, Arkansas, Missouri ,New York Arizona New Mexico, California, Florida and still no arrest..

I've been in a handful of encounters with the cops over the past year or so and I find as long as you're respectful and polite, your chances of getting out with a warning are much greater. Usually, with UE, my tactic is to reassure them that I'm simply there to take pictures. Usually they sympathize with that and we have a conversation about how there can often be vandals and arsonists looking to cause destruction to abandoned buildings. If they ask me my name, I politely give it and so far, I've only been given warnings. I think cops just really like to see people cooperate with them willingly, because they're just doing their job after all. I also feel that the fact that I'm younger really plays to my advantage because most police officers are so used to dealing with disrespectful teenagers, that a polite and respectful younger person who's just there to take pictures is the least of their worries.

Ive been doing this hobby for over 15 years, and havent had to deal with a cop yet. Im not saying they havent shown up to places ive been, But ive been aware of them before they saw me, and have found a corner room, or even under a desk. Biggest lesson ive learned, Cops are paid by the hour, And if your willing to wait them out, they always leave. haha ~Quote By Thomas Edison~ I have far more respect for the person with a single idea who gets there than for the person with a thousand ideas who does nothing....

How to deal with cops? Treat them with respect like any other human being. If they're a good, decent cop, they will give you back the same respect. If they're not, it doesn't matter how much you know your rights and what they can and can't do, they're still gonna fuck you over anyway and you'll be more likely to catch a harder time about it if you come off sounding like some junior lawyer. Above all cops hate when you try to tell them what to do and how to do their job. Be respectful, act all aw shucks and hopefully you'll both be on your way sooner than later. I've only ran from the cops once or twice. One time the cops saw me drive my scooter through a red light and turned on their sirens, so I made a quick right turn into an abandoned neighbourhood that happened to be right there, and I lost them in there. So yes, the cops chased me into an abandoned place. [last edit 1/8/2014 2:17 AM by Steed - edited 1 times]

LOLOL! I love Canada for real. Canadians get the TPB on public television. Unites States has serious budget threats to public television every year. Canada got rid of the penny, US has something called the senate which ensures we'll always have the penny.
back on topic, watch Trailer Park Boys.
(is Bubbles right about doing lots of petty crimes that get no jail time i.e. when Ricky steals backyard grills?)
i propose a cops by region, and especially by country thread. laws in Canada = a ticket. laws in US = arrest likely felony charges, $5K for a lawyer, and two years later when you go to trail, your charges get dropped.

TPB is on Showcase, isn't it? I think that's a cable station you wouldn't get for free. We do, on the other hand, get Daily Show and Colbert Report on CTV, one of the main networks, free for everyone.
