Gravel travelin'. (w/ pics)

I took the long way home the other day.

1.

I know a bit of the back story on the first place I photographed...it was last occupied and still owned by a man who's well-known around these parts, due in part to his temper.

2.

The place is basically in the middle of nowhere. It was totally renovated in the early '90s and was absolutely gorgeous. Still is, except that it's falling in. The holes in the roof and the sagging ceiling on the ground floor have prevented me from going upstairs.

3.

The place was left full of family possessions. Clothing, food, a Christmas tree, furniture, photos, you name it. I can almost guarantee you that very little of what's inside has been left by squatters. I know this family somewhat, so I could just tell.

4.

When I was there last summer I found a diary written by the owner's wife in which she described all manner of abuse. After reading it out loud to my fiance' (now my husband) and photographer friend, they convinced me it was time to leave.

5.

I ventured out there alone on Saturday and was too spooked to go inside again without a buddy. It's been vandalized quite a bit since the last time I was there. It seemed there was no one else there except a cat on the front porch who scampered off when I got out of my car, but the forced-open front door (there was easy access elsewhere the last time I stopped by) and broken windows were new damage, and I was afraid someone might be living inside. Plus there were tire tracks and footprints all over the snow.

6.

A couple of people drove by but seemed unconcerned, since it was broad daylight and I was carrying a camera.

7.

Another bit of recent history on this place: A man was murdered near an outbuilding on this property. That actually creeps me out less than the fact that a woman was terrorized by her husband in this place they called home.

8.

If I can get back inside again, I'll get interior pictures. The damage that's occurred in the past two years makes me think I'd better go back soon, before it's too dangerous to enter at all.

9.

Next stop was this house about five miles away. I know nothing about it except that when I was a kid I think someone was living there. So it's been occupied in the past 20 years.

10.

Unlike the previous location, this place is posted with "no trespassing" signs. The road past it is somewhat more well-traveled, and the neighborhood is known for drug houses and the occasional assault. It's right beside the next place I photographed, an old one-room schoolhouse.

11.

There you have it...my first real UE post.

OUCH! that aint right man....

Iliamo, looks like a nice house, some elbow grease and a paint bucket and it should clean up real nice!

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

Thanks for the back story on the places!

There's a house a couple miles from me that looks VERY similar, only with boarded up windows. There's an elderly lady that lives there with her 40+ year old son... word is that they have TONS of money in ground but neither of them farm. They chose to live in a place like that.

Living in the near by area, most of my explorations are the same kind. Not knowing if there is somebody squatting inside, meth labs, protective neighbors in the wide open, etc. Especially while going solo.

I'm thankful for the new snow to see what kind of activity is around.

Yeah, and the holes in the roof, and the sagging ceiling inside. It could probably still be saved, but it'd probably cost a small fortune. Knowing what I know about the place, and being so far out in the middle of nowhere, I decided it was stupid for me to go in alone.

I also went past my old house several miles away and had to drive halfway down the dead-end road before I saw signs of life that convinced me it's not abandoned. From the looks of it, it might as well be...the owners only purchased it for the hunting ground. They live in the house but they haven't made any obvious improvements in the past 18 years, and time is taking its toll.

I'm less worried about protective neighbors (unless they have sawed-off shotguns) than I am about squatters and druggies. Recently a guy got busted in a nearby town for making meth in an abandoned house, so my imagination was running wild. The past two times I'd been there, I hadn't seen many signs of vandalism. So the broken windows and open front door gave me the willies. Best case scenario is that kids party there at night, hence all the tire tracks and footprints in the snow. But I wasn't gonna risk it alone.
