Lake Area Roof Top Exploration/Infiltration

I decided I could get more results by posting publically with this than just the local guys

I recently found a real basic way to get on an old store near my houses room (part of a group of stores)....and was curious How I could go about Infiltrating the inside!

The roof top consist of no ladder openings that I could see (it was night time), but there are many roof top ac units and candy cane shaped sheetmetal things (in movies these lead to air ducts?).

Anyways....One big question: If I got into an airduct...and dropped down into the old store (huge!)...how would I get back out?

My main concern about using a door would be security systems, and or, one of the still active places next to it...seeing something suspicious.

plus the fact I don't know how to open locked doors

Any Help is appreciated.

There are at least 6 closed buildings right in the same area that was once like a shopping center...the active are jsut spread out in the mix.

Well, I have never done a few of the things I think getting in the building would need:

1. Lockpicking (nor do I know where to get the tools/knowledge)
2. Rapelling (I could get a large rope....but insuring my safety isnt gauranteed)
3. Groups. It would be more fun w/ more people... Maybe after awhile.

I am sure climbing the rope (30-50 ft) would be a tough task if I just dropped in through a duct w/o it being tight. I need to start working on this activity from a tree or something. :-\

More Scouting Needs to be done, as well as getting pictures to get better opinions.

These are either air vents or intakes, shaped like that to keep out water or other debris. Try and find out if there's an attic or crawl space up there, from which there may be some way down. It may only have a machine room in one section. Beware - many stores have only an unsupported drop ceiling and you'll have to walk or crawl on the beams.

Yet another unoriginal generic UE website. GODDAM!

If this store is remotely active, no ones going to buy the UE angle. You'd be booked on B&E and that would be the end of any chance of ever working at a decent job.

Well, the store is empty for sure. It moved buildings about 7 years ago...but still has lights on inside (security?). Until I can get pictures, imagine an L shaped row of buildings... The upright part of the l would eb the old grocery store (harder for roof access), and the base of the L would be the little stores (upper/lower level as well), the bar, and the department store.

My biggest concern: Climbing up the "candycane"...and dropping into the duct. The thing sits about 3-4 feet high from the roof level....I don't know how much of a drop into the duct. If its anything over 4 feet...I'd rather not try to get out that way (hard to drip round sheet metal)...then I would be trapped.

Another thing is: The back of the buildings has a door for each store...which is probaly why there is no roof hatches. Chanes are though: they are all locked.

If the lights are on, they probably have a silent security system, with cop dialer & motion detecors. Battery backup: if power turned off, calls store owner. There isn't any good way to get around these systems.

The more I hear you describe this place, the more I think it's a bad idea to try and enter. Just because it isn't a store anymore doesn't mean it's abandoned, it could very well be storage or used for something else. I suspect if you were caught you'd get arrested for B & E. And as already stated, that can definately affect your chances at securing a decent job in the future.

My opinion, it doesn't sound like it's worth it.

There was some guy recently that tried to break into a resturant this way a few months back and he got stuck and died. I wouldn't do it.

Alright.... Looks like time to scout soem more and look for an alternative way in! ...I am going to give the vent way a peek though, just as a possibility. I might be able to remove a lwoer piece of the sheetmetal to avoide the higher candy cane part of it.
I am sure it isnt completely abandoned...maybe jsut maintained still for people that are interested in buying or leaseing it. I haent figured that out yet.

Thanks For the input! Pics should be here tomorrow, or sunday!

Well good luck & dont get pinched. If you do, there are 2 things that will happen:

1.) The cop that arrests you will go home at the end of the day
2.) You won't.

Yeah, I am checking other places. One I know for a fact has a roof hatch!

How can I open this from the roof? When I seen it from the underside....Nothing of the alarm type appeared. The only problem I can think of for this place is: no outside ladder!

when i read this, all i could think was "why would he want to go to such a great length to get into an abandoned store, which probably only has old empty shelves in it, and have the chance for getting booked for B&E?"

No shelves even. The reason for em wanting to get in: Experience Challenges are fun, even more so when there is a risk of getting caught!

Places to learn this: try searching google (there is a wealth of information on the internet about lock bypassing)
Tools needed: Lock picks. Make your own out of hacksaw blades or buy some (you can buy them online without proving your a locksmith).

Search Google for the "MIT Guide to Lock picking" its by far the best manual out there oh and I know this is off topic but speaking of MIT has anyone noticed how many cool programs come out of there the MIT black jack team was SWEET!!!

Oh yeah a thought about the repelling and lock picking:
You don’t learn surgery by doing a triple by-pass you learn by reading and class room work plus your first operation isn’t going to be a triple by-pass it will be a tonsillectomy or something. In other words you shouldn’t start an adventure with that many new things to try maybe you should learn lock picking and repelling at like a course or something then when you’re ready to trust your life to you own experience then maybe try some mission imposable shit.

Thanks Guys.

Not only would lock picking come in handy is this place If I wanted, but the storage mines near my house. It would save me 20 minutes of walking to get to the "good stuff" in the mines by usign the main gate!

Thanks.
