Drainage Exploring: The Glori Hole

I'm sure a thread exists for this spot somewhere, but I could not locate one so here we go:

A large dam sits at the base of a lake and, to prevent the water level from rising above the lip of the dam, a large spillway drain was erected to divert excess water from the top of the lake's surface down into a nearby creek. Water travels two hundred feet down from the surface of the lake down to the creek via a drainpipe that has a diameter of about 70 feet at it's largest point and still 30 feet at it's narrowest.

The drain can be seen and accessed from the creek of which it pours into, however, the temperature of the water in the creek is extremely cold -- making it nearly impossible to even attempt to swim. The most recommended and successful route for explorers is to gear up and actually raft over to the drain -- making for a very unique and fun exploration adventure!

Nice!

Yes, I did a thread on this location quite recently. Unfortunately I accidentally made it a full-members-only thread which is why you can't see it.

I was the person that helped Rachel out with the logistics of how to get out to that location. It's a small world! Glad my info helped out a fellow UER'r too.

I'm sorry if this is totally unrelated but I immediately thought of this after seeing these pictures.

Ha! Nice

Not unrelated at all either! The drain is definitely a bit of a famous california skate spot:

Awesome stuff pgathriller! Love #6.

Still, I want to keep as far away from that death hole as possible. Saw way too many spillway accident report videos and someone died up there in the 1990s.

This is why I enjoy UER.

Supposedly it's really rare that the water gets high enough that the drain is actually "active" but I'd take "rare" to probably mean a few times a year so I guess potentially yeah, it will start running after some heavy consistent rains

Yeah I read about the death up there; for some reason the lady was swimming in the lake near the upper mouth of the glory hole for know the hell knows what reason :/

imo it's not really too dangerous at the bottom -- because of how the spillway operates, it can't really just suddenly engage. You'd be able to predict it by looking at the water level on the lake and, unless it's raining while you're out there, the water level on the lake doesn't change but whoooo knows

Oh nah, it's a river that flows out of a lake so it's definitely still only boat-accessible; the amount of water that flows into the river is actually regulated by the dam (by a seperate drain than the glory hole drain) so it's flowing year round

Ah, I didn't know the dam fed this river. okay, well that changes things a bit. the reason I was asking is that this location came up in my news feed last night with people wondering about just how dry the area actually is right now. The picture I saw of the glori hole up top was fully exposed and I guess would now require a ladder to climb into the top since the water level dropped like 25ft (probably more) or something like that.

i wouldn't be surprised, soooo many lakes are lower than ever. the lake by me had an old town flooded to make the lake... you can walk through the town now, and the "lake" shore is something like 300 feet from the edge of the dam. they even took this opportunity to do some repair work on the damn lol.

I mentioned this on part time wanderers thread, but this is a world-famous skateboarding spot.....from back in the old days when skaters sought out remote locations to enjoy their craft much like many of us urban explorers do now. I know many people who have made the trek to skate it. In skateboarding terms, It requires several hours to clean the pipe up and dam the trickle of H20 with kitty litter to get some dry time in to skate it. Now a days, you can pay 5 bucks to walk in to lake cunningham and skate a pristine 24 foot full pipe and get carried out on a stretcher when you screw up. I have a friend of a friend who paddled out to the glory hole, spent several hours doing the clean up and broke his arm on his first run in it! Definitely a better explore than a skate spot now a days.

I went with DtEW a week or two ago. We just did the hike and had no boat. We met a guy from Duluth that was on a road trip checking out skate spots!

i did this place back in about 1998 when i first moved to berkeley. there used to be a wonderful skate blog called the nose wheelie and the dude who wrote that blog (again - back in the 90s) did a post one time and gave very explicit directions on how to do this place. just like you - we went with the inflatable raft and ended up spending the night inside. skated it for a good 6 hours on and off and had one of the most memorable experiences of my life. well done man - thanks for sharing - brought back some great memories for me.
we have some full pipes in texas that are legendary too but the approach there is far more intense than at the old glory hole. three pipes lined up side by side - 50 feet in diameter with the mellowest transitions ever!
