Snakes and more snakes....uggh

I was recently out exploring and found a shaft that I wanted to check out. I set up an anchor, tied a knot in the end of my 200 foot rope, and dropped into the darkness. Little did I know what I was going to find when I got to the bottom.

(1) Nowhere Nevada.

(2) Yep, it's deep and it's dark. Sounds perfect.

(3) Geared up and ready to descend.

(4) Two important things in this photo:
First, the rope ended about three feet above the floor
Second, there is a snake on the old dish washer and another just a bit lower to the left.

(5) Everywhere I looked there was another snake. Some were alive and others were dead.

(6) Count the snakes!

(7) I never been happier to be out of a mine!

I don't know snakes so I don't know what type these are. It was pretty cool down there so they were quite sluggish. I'm REALLY glad that they weren't active.

Turns out the mine was about 150' deep. If it would have been any deeper I would not have been able to get off the rope. Going down isn't too bad, but climbing out is a bit of work. No ladders. No steps. Just climbing up the rope.

Still, it was fun to get out and do some exploring. Next time I'll skip the snakes.

150'? Not bad! I'm glad you had enough rope.

Great set Abby! Number 1 gives a great perspective of the shaft in relation to the vastness of the Nevada desert. It's unfortunate that people are traversing the barren land just to drop junk down into the mine.

Also, I would hate to be stuck down there with all those snakes.

I can get a wireless remote for my wench? Bitchin! Wait........winch. Not as cool.

Nice shots Abby. Snakes are the one thing I truly hate about living in the desert.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Yeah, the first photo gives a taste of the desolation. I was a bit concerned that I had broken the rules of giving away the POE for the site. I'm hoping I don't have a moderator tell me to remove it.

Truly a 150' climb isn't bad. It was stuffy so it wasn't a lot of fun. I was just glad that it wasn't 160' deep cause that would have left me a bit short.

damn girl, you have some balls!! I am not sure I would have been able to unhook once I saw all the snakes. Good job!

hmmm, seems like I saw something remarkably similar to this one on ebay just a couple of days ago , eh? ;)

Remarkably similar. My curiosity got the better of me. It didn't say ANYTHING about being a snake mine.

Yeah.... It's not that I hate snakes, but I'm not a fan either. Dropping down into a confined space with snakes EVERYWHERE and I don't know if they are rattlers or not. I wasn't at all happy. I snapped a couple of pictures and got the heck out!

I'll be posting up some more pictures from my great adventure later in the week. Don't want to post them all up at once.

Just from the pics, they could either be gopher, desert glossy or rattlers. Anyway, there are too many for me. You have cajones for even unhooking. I would have scaled the shaft in 2.3 seconds with the rope!

Just celebrated the birth of my third girl, an exploration all in its self.

Wow awesome pics. I love exploring mines, but had no idea that you can find snakes. I guess mines in Colorado are different than the ones in Nevada. Very interesting...

This was the first time I've ever seen a snake in a mine and it more than made up for all the mines I've been underground when I didn't see any. Sheesh.

I'd love to see some pics of your Colorado mines!

Yeah. Ok. NT. *jumar*

Nice one, Abby. I think you found the black hole pitfall for snakes, where they go to never return. I'm sure some of the live ones might have appreciated a ride back up to the living world... although I'm sure it would be a scorpion-and-the-frog kind of affair.

You look like you have an old Edelweiss Canyon 10.2mm.
